It's a pain trying to remove old references to domains, and I wonder whether NamePros should set up their robots file to prevent indexing of certain boards, particularly the appraisal board and the market place?

it would be great to unindex appraisal threads. the dude from Saudi Arabia just ruined my sale: namepros.com/threads/resolved.1136460/#post-7232176

You had a few people give the same opinion, not just him.

If you ask for advice be prepared to get responses you don't agree with. Otherwise you are just looking for justification.

I thought Appraisal threads aren't indexed? Or perhaps that is just the professional appraisal sections.
@Eric Lyon probably knows the answer

And chat room should be noindex.

LOL you can't "ruin a sale" when there was no sale there in the first place

Appraisal - yes. Marketplace no. It is important for marketplace listing to show up on search as that will increase visibility.

The easiest way may be to require you must be logged in to read certain forums. If the software on thise site allows that, not only would it encourage more people to at least create an account, but it would also prevent indexing of sensitive forums without too much work on the part of the forum mods/owners.

Tip to noobs: Never post an appraisal request at the same time you put up a domain for sale. You might not like the results. :-P

if you seek appraisal for a good name, then replies should be favorable,
then indexing would be beneficial

if you post :poop: names for appraisal and replies are not favorable, then indexing won't matter.

in sales, just list as "make offer" then indexing will show thread, and that exposure may bring in a buyer.

imo...

I've had this discussion several times with NP's Admin. There is no way they are going to block the search engines from searching the marketplace. This is where a lot of the connections are made by the search engines. They are selling advertising to these visitors. They just are not going to cut off that juice just because it harms or makes it difficult for us Domainers. It's the price we have to pay for using their marketplace. If we don't like it, we can go elsewhere. I'm sorry if I'm the bringer of bad tidings. Or if I have misrepresented the position of NP's. As I understand it.

What we need to do is to take this into our own hands and educate sellers to clean their own threads. I mostly get cooperation from most sellers. But there is a small cadre of sellers who think they know better. As well as some inexpereinced sellers who are at a complete loss. Overall. I have managed to get about 80% of the domains I've won, sanitized to 100% satisfaction. It often takes more than one bite of the cherry. Which is annoying for both of us.

At least the one said advancd was worth $9 another said it was worth nothing.

In general if you seek opinions before or after sales some will come in low some high even if the domain is a good one.

This is what I send to the sellers of all the domains I purchase on NP's.

Before you close your thread. Please do the following.....

1) Edit the entire title to the word "Closed"
2) Edit the entire first post to the word "Closed"
3) Edit any post which mentions the domain, a price, or me to two dots ".."
4) Please allow me time to edit my own posts
5) Then you can close the thread.

We cannot do anything about losing bidders posts. We are stuck with those.

Often times the sellers close their thread immediately. Thinking this is best. And they have to re-open the thread to do this sanitizing. Which can be annoying to re-open the thread. If we could get them to perform these actions, after they have been paid. It would prevent a lot of the upset caused by having to re-open a prematurely closed thread.

I agree I’ve had to ask the seller to do that before. But also then as I believe you allude we have bidders who Quote the seller (and the quote contains the domain name) when making their bids and only the bidder may request to clean up these posts.

At the end of the day you may need cooperation from seller and bidders just to remove all references to the domain you just bought. I’ve done it - enlisted aid from multiple parties successfully.

Don’t forget about tags too - sometimes gotta get those removed as well.

Yeah the issue of other bidders, which can be just too difficult if many bidders, and tags, I haven't even gone near that can of worms. Maybe we could get NP's to clean posts after each fresh high bid <joke>.

Things change anyway. A name might not be considered valuable at the time it's posted in the np appraisals section.. that's not to say it'll not be valuable years later, when a potential buyer might search it.

In the old forum software that we used, the forum name was included in the URL. In the new software, the forum is not included in the URL, so it's not possible anymore to use robots.txt to block indexing of a specific forum.

You might consider using the members-only, non-indexed Professional Appraisals section next time.

Also, spacing out your domain name can help with search engines if you want to avoid indexing:
  • e x a m p l e . c o m.

And chat room should be noindex.
The chat room only shows the most recent messages, so each time the index updates, all previous messages are replaced with the more current messages. It's basically noindex in the long-term, but in the short-term, some things may get indexed temporarily.

In short, NamePros services (marketplace, appraisals, etc.) are free in part because the content is indexed, which brings new buyers and sellers to it over time and keeps the machine running. Otherwise, NamePros would need to charge for its services to keep things operational and useful for members.

Professional Appraisals fits this description.

The Insiders Club also has:
  • A non-indexed area for discussion
  • A non-indexed area for buying and selling
