strategy Started a new strategy for Pacemakers.com

Medtronic legally released all claims to Pacemakers.com so I feel more free to massively promote the name. I took a chance contacting them but it worked out in the end.
I started a twitter and linkedin campaign to sell the name for 1 million dollars using retweets. If I sell the name for 1 million I am donating $100,000 for Heart, org.
I feel we all need to start being a bit more creative in the way we look at marketing and I am helping heart disease in the process. I will end up donating something no matter the final price. I have had too many people I know die of heart disease.
Anyone else have any creative ways they have marketed their domains?

If you really cared you'd donate half. Man up! 10% seems like a marketing gimmick to get it sold.

10% is a great amount of money and it is a marketing gimmick, Im not hiding that!

Had a friend die of a heart attack while his wife was in the car with him. I did not inquire who was driving. He had grandchildren but was only in his upper 50s or perhaps lower sixties - still working at the time.

My father died of a massive heart attack - my step father died of congestive heart failure and a good friend of mine had her husband die in January of a massive heart attack at the age of 59.
This has personal meaning and yes, it is tied to me selling a name. best of both worlds.

I admire Richards initiative and making a public statement about a 10% donation is commendable. It pretty well assures he would have to follow through (should he get his asking price) or lose respect in the industry.

Personally I don't think it's a million dollar domain because it has limited use for an end user. The singular version has infinitely more possibilities to an end user and I could see it selling for that amount before the plural does.

All that said I love an underdog and I will personally root for Richard and wish him the best in his sales and marketing attempt.

Thanks Maple - I fully intend to follow though and will probably give some money on any decent sale price.
I think the plural has more value than the singular - just my opinion and no documented proof to back it up.
I am always willing to try something new. You dont know if it works sitting on namepros bitching you cant sell your names :)

Singular of this domain might be better but both have value.

along the way, hurdles may unfold

unseen delays, silence for days

strategies... can end up going,
many different ways

Good Luck!

Why did you have to contact Medtronic in the first place? Why would they have had any claim to the domain?

My heart skipped a beat reading this

Great question - Medtronic owns trademark and used to own the name. I had a few companies balk because of this and a really well known domain person made a big deal about never selling it because of Medtronic. I had some really great discussions with them - they were fantastic.

And in the end they relinquished their rights?

And in the end they relinquished their rights?
Yes -
I can confirm that Medtronic has no intent of blocking any transfer of the domain name pacemakers.com. I have reviewed the records related to this domain, and confirmed that Medtronic did own this domain prior to 2015. But in 2015, Medtronic allowed its registration to expire. We no longer claim any ownership interest in the domain. Medtronic’s prior ownership should not encumber your ability to transfer the domain.

Please note that the above paragraph does not convey any license (express or implied) to any other Medtronic IP rights. I am simply confirming the fact that we do not currently own any rights in the domain pacemakers.com. Any other domain, or other IP right, is outside the scope of this discussion.

I saw your tweet a few days back, and read this passage with interest. I'm not a lawyer, but that language to me reads much more like a confirmation that they are not the legal registrant, but does rescind or release their rights in the trademark or related IP. Do you think a buyer's council would accept that the passage above removes the risk of UDRP on this name? They may have been friendly to you (and kudos for reaching out), but is it fair to assume they will be so friendly to a competitor? Great name BTW!

Wouldn't be more realistic and helpful to the cause to offer to donate 10% of final sale to Heart.org..

Let say you sell it for a hundred thousand, then ten thousand goes to Heart org..?

Just my thoughts

Good luck

I would not touch this name because of that trademark.

Medtronic owns trademark and used to own the name.
So at any time Medtronic can change their mind ? I think any buyer is going to ask about the TM and then walk away when they know its still active.

Anybody buying the name is going to do it to use it for business. If Medtronic feels its being hurt by that, out come the lawyers.

Without doing any research (not my domain, not my client), I think as far as in the medical field, pacemaker is like (or has become through common use like) a syringe. Generic medical device. It's not, for example, a word akin to a "Xerox" machine.

I also imagine that the word pacemaker has been trademarked and used for all sorts of things nothing to do with the medical device.

---

Was offered here for $59K here for $50K here for $27K

It's all conjecture at this point and personally I think the domain has a value of no more than about a quarter of the current asking price and even that is based upon finding the right end user. I mean I have seen a lot better one word .com's sell for under a million dollars.

Do I think Richard has a good domain?

Sure, he does but a lot of other people have a good one word .com and they will probably not see a million dollar payday. It's a lot different than hunting down a 100k buyer, the million dollar buyer is much more elusive.

If Richard pulls it off I will be happy for him but I think it's a far stretch.

He’s not saying he’ll donate 10% or any particular percent. He’s saying that IF he sells the domain for $1M he’ll donate $100K. Then he adds that no matter what it sells for he will donate “something.”

Plus in any case he’s been willing to sell the domain for $27K which is a far cry from a million so the real purpose of all this is marketing / publicity which he freely and honestly admits is the objective.

I hope the domain sells for as much as possible.

Yes, I am confused by that as well.

I could not find any live entry in the TESS TM database for "pacemaker" owned by Medtronic, or related to the generic use in general. There are TMs for things like fishing lures, portable music players, automotive exhaust pipe, refined paraffin waxes, industrial gas and electric furnaces, sink bowls, and other random stuff.

With that said, while the domain is good, I don't think it is worth anywhere near that asking price.
This is a medical device people get by necessity. It is not like people shop around and order it online.
