Another Long One...But a Good On This Time...Or Am I Crazy?

Most of you know my story by now. 20 years ago I purchased dustie.com. I checked and dusty.com was available then too, but seeing as how domains were 100.00 a pop and I had just bought a new computer for 2,000.00+ (Remember those days?), I decided against buying it. If I remember it was about three months after that, 3 months of having to tell people how to spell my email address ([email protected]) umpteen times, I decided to go for it after all, but guess what...it was gone by then!

I have regretted that decision ever since. In the last 20 years I've spent spelling my name to folks who wanted my email address. It's the same as Recons.com said in the Dustie.com thread... having his name saves him a bunch of time spelling his email out. In my case, over 20 years, that's a LOT of time!

Well, when I thought dustie.com was gone for good, I went searching for another name in GoDaddy and, to my delight, I found that dustie.art was available for 9.99! I snatched it up...and then went looking for dusty.art immediatly after. Godaddy said it was not available. Figures...

But then, reading in here, and following links to read about the .art domain, it wasn't long before I discovered that, just because GD said it wasn't available, didn't mean it wasn't available! It could be that it was a Premium .ART name and GD wasn't carrying these premium names so simply said they wern't available when searched

So I went to .art...and sure enough, dusty.art was available...for £1710.00 (about 2200 in us dollars). I checked other registrars, and some had it 300 to 400.00 dollars higher then that price... and none had it lower. I just couldn't swing it.

Last night I went to look again on .art, and they still had it listed for £1710.00. This time I decided to click through to "purchase", choosing .art as the reigistrer, (you can choose others from .art's site) to see if maybe I could find out what renewal costs would be, knowing I'm not actually buying it until I pay for it.

Imagine my surprise when, on the next page .Art said "buy this domain for $1600.00/yr with 30.00 renewal! What? Really? That's nearly a 600.00 saving from what it had been just two pages back and for the last two days I'd been checking on it. OH, My Gosh... should I??? That's a lot of money...

Since I'm an artist, and want to use [email protected] for my art business, I would absolutely love to have dusty.art too. I'd never have to spell my name for [email protected]! All I have to do is have two emails that merge to the same email account.

So it was time to have a heart to heart with my husband, a non computer guy who I thought for sure would think I was crazier then a loon! I explained it all to him, and, partly because of how distraught I'd been over the dustie.com situation I'm sure, he agreed it would be a good name for me to have (Ok, so I took advantage of him at a weak moment...name a wife who hasn't!). He said that if that was what I wanted we could make it happen. After all, what are credit cards for, right?

Wahoo!! And to think...only two weeks ago I WAS totally DISTRAUGHT and DUSTYLESS! All three dusties are going to be under Lock and Key (have to find out how .art locks their domains now).

Am I crazy for going in hock and spending 1,600.00 on a .art domain name??? Probably...but I'm feeling a pretty happy crazy about it right now...:)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I think I'm still too emotional to be making any kind of decisions like spending 1,600 on a domain name anyway, right?
You said it right... You are pretty too emotional right now to make any kind of domaining decision. By all means, let it cool off first.

Introducing brand confusion is the worst thing you can do to your business/brand. And that's exactly what you're set out to do with this purchase. Let it be Dustie. Leave Dusty alone and concentrate in building the Dustie brand. People will get used to it.

it seems "art" is always expensive :xf.wink:

Well, Original Art is, for sure!

Sigh...dusty.art... This ship may have sailed, but funny thing... I still want it! If I were rich, I'd have had it when I first saw it. Sigh...

Well, it's the Domainer's who shined the Premium Name light in the Registrar's direction so I guess you all did what you did for many years in a very successful manner! Congratulations!

As an Artist, more then anything else, I do love the .Art name, maybe not so much for investing, but definitely as an end user! And I want it to be affordable and all my artists friends to have access to it! I know, right now that's a pipe dream but I don't think it's too much to ask.

I would used your last name like [email protected]

It makes more sense

It doesn't make sense to me though.

I'm walking proof that the less the person has to remember, the more likely they are going to remember. DustieMeads.art, DustieMeadsArt.com, [email protected] ... all are much more forgettable then Dustie.Com or Dustie.Art. I'm like Cher or Madonna.. but only in the sense that I'm an artist who prefers to go by their first name only, that and the fact that I'm a woman. There the similarities stop I'm afraid...

Taking off domainer cap, putting on end user glasses. Because you are asking, I believe, from a creative stance, not reseller:

I always tell my daughter, be the pack leader, not the pack, whenever she tells me all her friends are doing it. And when we apply "group think" to domain names, sometimes we miss the point and also miss out on some beautiful domains. I think people like you, who forge ahead or at least consider forging ahead with new concepts, are the ones who ultimately are defining tomorrows domain names, today.

Because the premium purchase on your particular domain is a one-time fee, meaning you don't have to worry about doing it over and over again every year, I think it's a worthwhile purchase for you. You're an artist, have discovered the .art extension, and you've found an exact fit to your personal brand (Dustie), I can totally understand the connection.

I also get how you don't feel the connection with the advised .com version, totally see how it really changes things. It takes out the "creative" and just becomes boring. Just another .com.

I think it is always wise to give a day or two contemplation before dropping xxxx amount of dollars into a name, so maybe it was meant to be the transaction didn't complete. Buyers remorse is the worst with domain names- but sometimes non-buyers remorse is an even bigger challenge to overcome!

We are heading into the new G's about 5 years now, I honestly don't think you have to worry about people confusing emails, lol. People will "get" it, and you could always an attractive little explanation of sorts on your site to begin with.

Anyhow, nope don't think your crazy, nothing wrong with spending xxxx amount on something you love and plan to use. The combination of name+extension makes sense and people should not have any issues understanding- especially creative artsy folk! I would forward corresponding .com to the .art to give it a good foothold (if you were to buy it). Now, as resale value, I would not drop that kind cash on that particular name and extension. But that's a different conversation.

A WISE MAN AND EXACTLY RIGHT ON WITH IT ALL!

Ok I didn't read a few posts but here is one scenario where your purchase makes total sense. If you sell Dustie.com for an upper-five to six figure price. Believe me it's not a stretch!! And knowing your luck I feel the odds are on your side!! :xf.wink::xf.wink::xf.grin::xf.love:

Note: I know you said you will never sell it but I am thinking from a 360 degree angle where further down the line you know the cash from a super big offer would help you live your unfulfilled dreams... take down that bucket list for instance! :xf.smile::xf.smile::xf.smile:

smartwebby...I do have plans of hanging onto Dustie.com pretty tightly for the time being. But, damn, if an offer like your talking about came in, I don't know what I'd do. I'll figure that out after I wake up from the coma an offer of that sort would put me into!

I haven't heard from the .Art people about cancelling my dusty.art purchase yet....probably because this is Easter Sunday. I don't see how the can hold me to the sale though. It's not been paid for and they never even took it off their search yet. They still have it up for sale.

I just don't get this infatuation with Dusty.Art, AT ALL. You have Dustie.com, and Dustie.Art. And your brand is Dustie, not Dusty. I would also protect my brand by also registering DustieArt.com. I would be openly grateful with whoever screwed up the credit card charging (even if it was yourself... which would be fate). You could have both Dustie@ AND Dusty@ email addresses on all 3 domains. That should be enough email addresses to stop worrying about people mispelling your name. And only 1 reply email address [email protected]. Save you money and concerns. We are only trying to protect you from your own worst excessive behavior. Truely.

Stub, If I told you to send me an email at [email protected], or I told you to visit my website at www.dustie.art. Then when you got home, how would you spell my name to look it up or to send me an email? Remember, you didn't see my name written and I didn't tell you how to spell it... How would you spell it to look it up? Be Honest...

That is why I want dusty.art.

If I were you, if you were speaking to me. I'd say, "that's Dustie with an ie" as you were telling me your email address on the phone. The "ie" is what make it you AND your brand. They won't forget it. I can assure you. How many emails have you missed with your [email protected]. How did you cope with that in the past? It's just crazy to pay $1-1.6k, for a domain which is not your brand, simply because somebody might mispell you domain one time, even after you have spelled it out to them. Nobody is going to forget your brand after they have seen it in writing. Believe me.

Honestly I would always spell it as Dustie lolz. Dusty means dusty. Maybe just me! LOL

I agree with others, time to not make any emotional purchases for a while. You need to think this whole thing through deeply yet!

Not sure if this would help but here is my experience. I dabble in painting/sketching and for lack of options I had registered Anita.club for my art site before .art was even available. However over a period of time I just wanted a .COM and with my luck I stumbled upon SearchingArt.com in the mines (lol drop lists). The more I thought of it the more i didn't want something like AnitaArt or AnitasArt (obviously unavailable even then. I am describing my thought process). I wanted something meaningful that I totally identify my work with. For me Art is searching.... searching for and expressing your true self through all the artistic modes possible. I also dabble in poetry and creative writing. So the more I thought the more it made perfect sense to me to brand all my creative work under SearchingArt.com.

Do what resonates with your soul :xf.love:... stick to .COM when you are conflicted is my humble opinion.

:xf.smile:
Anita

Edit: I also always think futuristically so it might initially just have my work and expand and morph into something else like maybe curated art or art that includes that of my kids (both are artistic too). :) Just a different perspective.

Stubs, I've spent the last 20 years telling folks " That's Dustie with an ie and not a y", always wishing I'd bought the dusty.com back when I bought Dustie.com so wouldn't have to be telling everyone that.

So when I saw that dusty.art was available, thinking of the 20 years I've been spelling my name, I was immediately smitten. Figured i could put it on my credit card and pay it off over time.. I was happy...but then everyone here brought me back down to earth.

That's a freaking lot of money just to not be spelling my name for people. So I did write to cancel the transaction. Have not heard back if they've cancelled it, but it's Easter so that might be why. It's still for sale on their site, my card info is not complete on their site..so I can't see why they would try to hold me to a sale when they never took it off the market and they don't have to issue a refund. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

I agree. It's a freaking lot of money and a freaking waste of money also. OK. If you are rich and can afford it. But you don't strike me as somebody who spends money frivolously. Until now. Stick with your brand. It's all you need to succeed. I am very confident that your credit card has not been charged and will not be charged. A nice Easter present for you. I think branding with the "ie" is way more cooler than using the "y" :)

I agree 100% with what @stub said. They didn't charge you so you should just ensure it remains as such. See.. I knew you were lucky!! :xf.grin:

SmartWebby...SearchingArt.Com fits you but I went to visit your site and it's an Undeveloped domain site saying that searchingart.com is for sale? Did you not develop that beautiful site you were describing? I love what you said about searching and expressing your true self through different artistic modes...you need to share that sentiment with others though a devoloped artist's site. I can see your wanting to sell SearchingArt.com. You are a domainer as well as a dabbler in art after all.

So, why don't you go ahead and leave SearchingArt.com up for sale, but go over to https://www.dynadot.com/domain/art.html and buy SearchingArt.Art. It's available over there for their sale price of 5.99. You can't beat that! I think that fits you VERY WELL indeed!

Thank you both Stubs and Smarty. I do feel better about not having spent the money that way. I had gotten my credit card down to below 500.00 and here I was going to jump it up to over 2000! I guess that's why I posted in here. I was happy about getting dusty.art, but at the same time I was thinking I might be crazy. I think I was a little bit after all that's happened really. Thanks you guys, for the very sound advice!

Oh, and no, I'm not rich. I'm not a starving artist....but not rich. I'd put us solidly in the middle class. ;)

Yes dear, I know it's perfect for my use. Nowadays I put in the undeveloped nameservers immediately after I receive the domain name in my account. If I don't have a process in place I will forget! lolz

I prefer an undeveloped lander till I put up my site. Once the site goes underway it will have a page :)

Also since this was a dropped domain name it will give the previous owner an opportunity to put in an offer in case they really want it back.

I don't like GTLDs. .COM is always king, .ORG queen :xf.wink:. There is an ocean to be said about them :) Searching.Art will only make SearchingArt.com more famous and leak traffic to it. Not the other way round IMHO. If someone does buy Searching.Art for $1k and decides to use it I am happy to have two or more artists do the same thing... Searching! lolz personal sites don't need so much IP protection. I think you are doing absolutely fantastic with Dustie.com.... please don't overthink it. Doesnt' get better than this.

Ah, well that makes good sense! Very Smart Too!

I've probably sold about a half dozen domains in the last 15 years, all small potatoes..under between mostly priced 500 to 800.00. It's really just a hobby and I leave it for long stretches of a time. I do check my premium GD domains, and change prices, from time to time, which, of course, probably led to my mistake of all mistakes!

Being in here has taught me I have so much to learn so I do think I'll hang around here for some time now...and try to learn from the true pros, of which you are one! ;) So pleased to have met you, another domainer gal and an artist at heart to boot!

I think getting reacquainted with NamePros was also a bit of my luck playing itself out these last two weeks.

Huh? You find Dustie.com a confuse domain so decide to double down on a far worse dustie.art for $1700 year? Hang head in shame!

And it might interest you to know that people still misspell "Google" till date. I mean, millions of people!

So, you can't help it, some people are going to misspell you name anyway, regardless of what you do.
