Bad Story of day :
I saw 6-7 months ago Onions.com sold in Flippa private acquisition in 17000 USD the person who sold he reported he kept this name for one year he bought in 7000 USD so he made handsome profit on it ... now the person who bought onions.com on flippa he sold privately to Vidala Onions in 14k usd today
I really want to know why he did this when enduser came to him. maybe he wanted cash ASAP? or he felt like he cant sell it anymore?
Any thoughts guys??

I'm the one that bought Onions.com .. Here's a short version of how it went down.

The previous owner won the domain at Flippa in 2017. I believe - per Namebio.com - that his purchase price was $18,501.

In May of 2018, he reached out to me regarding the auction of the domain on BizBuySell.com.

I passed. He replied:

"I originally was going to build out a site for all thing onions related but as of lately have too many pokers in the fire."

He asked if I had an affiliate program for Vidalia; I told him I didn't.

Then about 6 months later I noticed the domain up for auction again at Flippa. It had a reserve. The auction completed with a high bid around $9k from what I remember. It didn't meet reserve.

Then in early 2019, I noticed the domain up for auction again - (I believe on Flippa again?)

The domain received the same poor bidding response. Once the auction wound down, I reached out to see if he'd accept a $12k offer for the domain (I had his email from our previous conversation)

He replied that he had approx $18,500 in the name, & if we could meet in the middle at $15k, it'd be a done deal. He also offered to pay Escrow fees. So I agreed, and we closed the deal on Escrow.com.

Hope that sheds some light on this deal. It wasn't anything fancy.

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with the domain. My gut says it'd be a great place to sell Oranges.

Congrats, only 15k was a steal for buyer. It should have sold for 100k or even more to a big onion seller.

Vidalias are a very mild, sweet onion. They're often called 'the caviar of sweet onions'. They're so mild, that it doesn't make your eyes tear up when it's cut open. Most of my customers eat them like an Apple.. They're exceptional raw, and even better grilled or sauteed. They can only be called 'Vidalia' if they're grown in a certain region in south Georgia USA (similiar to how Champagne is in France).

Just wanted to findout what actually happened and all is clear but my question is to all domainers if they bought anything in higher price and sold in low price ..

I'll raise my hand on this one.. Years ago, I bought a package of 2 domains, RentalCondos.com and RentalVillas.com for $20k.. I intended to develop them, but that never happened. I ended up selling both separately, and I believe I netted around $17k to $18k in total. Not my best investment.

One way is to forward to vidalia, another one is put educational info page with lots of onion articles, recipes etc. and display that the project is brought to you by vidalia onions.

to me, some names just shouldn't be put on auction.

it's an excellent domain name, which could have earned some ppc,
those earnings could have closed the gap between acquisition cost and selling price.

That's never happened to me or anybody I know, I've been with them 17 years. I know if you use their API, like I was thru their WP plugin and don't get sales, they can zap that, but not the other creative. It's free branding for them, even if no sales come thru your site.

It happened to me twice and the non-api sites and traffic were not that bad but clicks on links were somewhat rare and orders even rarer, not sure why so I get Amazon emails saying due to slow activity accounts closed,

But, he didn't really need Onions.com. He doesn't sell any other types of onions besides Vidalia onions and he already owns VidaliaOnions.com, the category killer name for his niche.
