I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

I had fish.ca in my account for a few days, it averaged 4 uniques per day, how bad is that. I really just wanted to know the traffic stats of some of these generics. Not to good to say the least.

Surprising. It seems to me a really nice word (of course from my .ca sales record, or lack thereof, I seem to know very little about .ca domain names :xf.frown:). Fish could refer to fish markets, Christian sites, or various figurative uses.

It's a long time reserved 3/4 th level whatever they call it name. It's a great name, but never meant to see the light of day, so it sits in a dark cave, it's carcass rotting away. I was expecting at least 50-100 uniques per day, to see an average of 4 was very sad.

Bob, a few days ago you posted your story about town.ca, ironically enough, as you posted that story town.ca sat there unregistered, available to be registered at reg fee, how ironic was that.

so they are telling us there are things we can't do but they aren't going to tell us just what it is we can't do until we do it

The Wikipedia CIRA entry has the following with a link to the CIRA source.

"Names which match the name of an existing generic three-letter top level domain (such as .com.ca) or the Canadian top level country code (.ca) are reserved and therefore not available for new registrations. Certain expletives are not accepted as names. Municipal names of individual cities and localities within Canada are also reserved nationwide, along with village.ca, hamlet.ca, town.ca, city.ca, ville.ca and the names of Canadian provinces."
Would be interesting to know what the expletive list is, since I suspect different folks have different ideas re that.

It is interesting that 3 letter TLDs are excluded (I presume for confusion purposes) which would be a rather long list now with all of the ngTLDs, but apparently other length not? If available could I register say space.ca?

I presume they also honour the long list of exclusions that ICANN came out with a year or two ago re international organizations and their acronyms, etc.

And they allowed it to be registered? When I had it it showed it as available, I seemed to register it and had it in my account, but then they refunded my money simply saying it was not available.

Edit - I checked whois and they did seem to allow it. Now someone else has it :xf.frown: I really wanted that name!

Yes, likely the same will happen, but the timing of that story was impeccable.

There is a major mess all the reserved names villa.ca city.ca etc... were opened up when they were doing their updates, and were all showing available to register, some very valuable names. Now begins the pullback by the registry, breaking many hearts, but most knew it was coming, but you can't blame anyone for registering what was there to be registered.

At the time I lived in a small town and thought it would be fantastic for a reference site on the small towns of Canada, which was something I thought about developing as an early retirement project. Of course the reason it was apparently restricted was with third level you could use the one domain for a site for every town in Canada, which might make it valuable.

Oh well, I have a bunch of plans but undeveloped names, so good not to have one more!

Best wishes to whoever has it. I see it is at CanReg who I would have thought, if it was going to be taken away, would already have done so. I use them and they seem very informed on all the .ca rules.

It's a reserved name in their TOS, they are pulling them back, likely the same thing that happend to you will happen to them, unless cira has a change of heart in their restrictions. It is just a hiccup in the upgrade.

Fish.ca would also be a good dating site. It could give Plenty Of Fish (POF) a run for its money!

But as Bob mentioned and with me being a Christian myself, Fish would make a good Christian site.

POF is a Canadian company, guy started it in his one bedroom apartment, sold it to match.com I believe for $550M. It was a great name, but it is never meant to be as it has one of those grandfathered extensions somwhere on.ca sk.ca who knows... but I would have thought bang for buck it would bring home some more unqiues. I had the traffic monitored for a few days, lackluster to say the least. Not even a penny in PPC.

Those province codes were always in pending creation status, so you couldn't even change the nameservers as they were never activated.

Yep, but others like TOWN.CA and CITY.CA resolve.

Yes, city.ca has been kicking around for a while, and very dangerous given it has a purchase button on the lander.

I'd love to register cira.ca and park it :xf.love:

Yeah, just try it!

Nobody does type-in anymore, other than people looking to a) check availability of a domain or b) purchase a domain. There is some typo traffic when mis-typing in well-known sites like TWITTER, GOOGLE or FACEBOOK, but that's it.

But even Grandpa Jones goes to Google if he wants to find FISH-related sites instead of just blindly typing in FISH.CA like he's back in the mid-90's.

Someone here read this thread and then registered it - just visit the domain and see :)

But I'm betting (as mentioned in an earlier post) that city/town/ville/hamlet will be revoked since they are clearly listed as being restricted. I reg'd ville/hamlet - not that I thought they were super valuable but more just to see if I could... Other domains not explicitly listed such as county/region/culture/etc... may have a slightly better chance of surviving. Note that no one seemed to scoop up district.ca - it is back to being restricted - I didn't notice it wasn't reg'd until it was already restricted again.

I had actually noticed that some of these domains were showing as available in whois back on Jan 19 - I even had my registrar try and reg one for me but he said it wouldn't work and I quickly gave up, realizing that of course these domains were reserved/restricted and that their new whois was just messed up. I didn't realize that those whois results were foreshadowing the epic CIRA fail in the fury cut-over. If I'd have connected those dots back then, I'd have probably been lying in wait and clean-swept all those domains for myself! (only to of course lose most of them anyways).

Trust me, I scooped that one long before it ever hit this thread :xf.laugh:

Proud papa for a few days anyways :nailbiting:

I have 44 more of those unmentionables :sneaky:

I have a quick trigger finger

If only 2-3 make it through it will have been worth it.

Anyone taking bets on tomorrow's tbr? gonna go smoothly? Even if it goes smoothly at CIRA, I'm guessing that there's some chance that some registrars will still have issues since this will be their first attempt at TBR...

And just a tip, look at the registration dates on some of those LLL.CAs - many of them have been off the market since at least 2000.

CYS.ca, JPK.ca, KVC.ca, SJI.ca, YWI.ca, and WFM.ca may not seem like much next to ultra-premiums like KV.CA or TCP.CA, but there could be some pent-up demand out there over the last 18+ years, and for some, I am certain there is.

Nice NNN included

Yeah, it's a really good 2 weeks at the very top, with an LL, a NNN (no zeroes), and a premium LLL, along with some very nice single-words.

But then it drops off a cliff real fast.

So who do you think will take the LL.CA?

Odds are MyID (1:3), Sibername (3:1), Pool (5:1)
