I just saw a post on FB by a broker that the domain name Smartphone.com is for sale by it's owner at $100,000.

I initially thought that it was cheap but then, some of the other domainers argued that the name may be outdated in the next 3-4 years.

What are your views on this pricing and why?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I think its a bargain for an end user planning to build a business on it.

I do like the plural better tho, for a business.
Plural is owned by Samsung.

The plural doesn't resolve which is lost traffic, what a shame.

I would recommend you sell this quick, as many have stated this space is evolving rapidly as there is a huge race to the next generation, not sure what they will call it, but I do hear the phone cell phone, mobile still, less smartphone which is more of a technical term.

I think one of the best buyers for this name is a company that is the news quite a bit, but could really benefit from the global use of this name is huawei, if you can make contact with someone there.

Why don't you buy it at 100k and sell it sir.

Sometimes the most generic names, can be the hardest to develop or sell.

I know Rick Schwartz had a real issue with Property.com which looks like it came back to his possession again. You would think it is a GTLD extension, and all that, but these kind of names take a lot of door knocking, a lot of NO's, but knock on enough doors, get told no enough times, you will start to make ripples, and maybe someone sees it. This one needs exposure outside this small community.

If I was going to buy a name for $100K, I would have bought stop.com, You should have put it in namescon with a reserve just for the exposure. There are a lot of smaller phone makers who could use the name, it is just getting your foot in the door, the money aspect shouldn't be an issue given what is spent on marketing in this space.

Technology is changing, as many have stated, the smartphone defn will change with it. I would try to force the topic, and push the sale to a good end user buyer. I don't know about Sedo, hit, and miss, sometimes buyers pay, other times they run away.

I agree sedo is very slow, you send one message wait a day, they send a message, you reply, wait another day etc... the internet moves way to fast for these slow pokes.

Fair price, should have sold it when the term was at its height.

How much traffic does this name get?

Alexa 14+M, probably means in 20-80 range daily visitors. Probably not worth buying for traffic reasons.

You'd buy it for authority, reputation, recognition, memorability, cool factor.

I think smartphone won't be outdated in coming years.
The current definition of smart will change in coming years with technology advancements but the term name will remain the same to describe the features in one word i.e smart .
$100k is very low price.

Actually the term phone is outdated ,so smartphone term came. The term smartphone will still fulfill the purpose with technology advancements.

I agree. Smartphone won't be outdated, as we still have landline phones, conference room phones etc.

Again, were I in smartphone related business, which is typically a low cost to enter, it would be no-brainer to acquire it and get a competitive edge.

I agree with you. You'd be buying for exactly those innate characteristics. Their could be some huge retail buyers for this name. A name like this over time will end up returning multiples of the initial acquisition cost if used correctly.

If you buy this domain you don't wait 5 years to develop it. It is buy and build now industry with a good development it just may pay itself off in first year.

yes, I believe since the keyboard was invented someone else has wanted to improve it, and new keys will appear.

Cheap, but who will buy it, this is the problem. Almost no domain is a must, or a cash machine.

A global company can be happy with a strange cctld, and not buy .com even if offered for 500.
They will probably not buy even for 1 cents. They need to be in a special mood to make a purchase.
..
If "smart" part will be irrelevant, then phone.com should be worth more in the future than it is now.

Smartphones are like body organs which can't be separated from the rest of the body. You say, take a picture, call me, record this, but not use the word smartphone; in the same way when you say lift this thing, you don't say lift it with your hand.

I don't agree the word 'smart' is on it's way out.

Typing 'smart' into Google News comes up with many things in the last 24 hours (homes/watch/tracker/cars), CES last month (biggest tech event of the year) the word 'smart' was everywhere.

At $100k, i think it's safe to say they are targeting investors more so than end-users.

For an investor I think the biggest problem for the domain right now is threads like this, if i was the owner of the domain i wouldn't be too thrilled of this thread, people saying how it's not even worth $100k, when the owner or broker never asked for an appraisal on it, I think it's now been devalued because of that.

If i was buying the domain as an investment i would want this thread removed from Google which is going to be hard to do, any potential end-user is going to Google domain and will see this thread, people opinions of it and how much an 'investor' paid for it. That doesn't put any potential new owner in a strong position trying to make a profit.
