registrars NameSilo acquires NamePal

Just came across this news and thought it might be of some interest to others here. Apologies if irrelevant or already posted (the news is over 2 weeks old)...

From a press release on newswire.ca:

Under the terms of the Purchase Agreement, NameSilo acquired 100% of the membership interest in NamePal and, in consideration of which, Ronka has agreed to transfer up to a 1.75% interest in NameSilo to the Vendor (or its principals) as follows: (i) 0.5% of the membership interest within six months of closing, (ii) 0.5% of the membership interest within twelve months of closing, and (iii) 0.75% of the membership interest within eighteen months of closing. NameSilo has also agreed to retain the principals and existing staff of NamePal in order to integrate value added services and expand the NameSilo offering.

"The acquisition of NamePal provides us with a superb technical team to assist us in our rollout of higher margin domain services," says Kristaps Ronka, CEO of NameSilo LLC. "The NamePal team will be instrumental in taking the business to the next level. Importantly, the acquisition is non-dilutive to the Company's interest in NameSilo as it will continues to hold an 81.5% interest in NameSilo after closing of the acquisition."​

I don't follow all the technical jargon but found the news interesting because I really like NameSilo, whereas I have a diametrically opposite opinion of NamePal. Wondering if this will improve NamePal or whether the two will merge in some way... Also wondering what "higher margin domain services" NamePal provides?

My opinion about NamePal is about the same as yours. I'm sure NameSilo will just take all the domains into the NameSilo portfolio, and close NamePal. I don't know how many domains they have under registration. But I can't imagine it is worth 1.75% of NameSilo, who have over 1M domains under registration, and a 1000% better reputation as a Registrar. Aren't NamePal using NetSol backend, or do they use their own software? I cannot imagine they are paying much for any goodwill.

Merging NamePal into NS would make the most sense, definitely. I dislike the new NameSilo design and find it extremely buggy and modern for modern's sake - so I'm wary of the direction they seem to want to be moving in. It's a shame when the product and design that make a company great also make it successful enough that they can afford to question and rethink everything about it. Hope they can leave well enough alone!

I see Namepal offers hosting and sitebuilding, services which Namesilo does not, yet.

Namesilo have always made a point of having a straightforward focus on domains, without upselling and cross-selling.

Even with all the bugs, and I see quite a few. I think it is a vast improvement over NameSilo's previous 20th Century website (we are already 20 years into the 21st Century), which is so tiny and packed with so much information, it's virtually unreadable. I think the bugs are not being worked out quickly enough and some pages, like domains needs to get with the new layout ASAP. We should be seeing bugs being fixed every day. But we don't. So no point in reporting any. Most registrars move into the hosting business at some point in their life because there is so much money in it. Most designs I've seen from registrars aren't nearly modern or sassy enough to meet modern websites requirements. I'm wondering if that is true with NamePal's designs.

As the OP mentioned, this is not very new news. My guess is that NameSilo acquired Namepal for the fetch service (Namepal's backorder aggregation service).

Namepal does not have a lot of domains under management so I doubt that is a big enough incentive. Their service is not good and I share the opinions of those above for Namepal

Don't get me wrong. I applaud the NameSilo update. Even if I think they are not working on the bugs fast enough. After I reported 2, nothing ever happened. Even when the support staff agreed with me. I stopped worrying about it, and live with the bugs. At least they are running the two systems in parallel. If something buggy in one area, I try to go back to the old system. But I think they are also moving bugs from the old system to the new system. IMHO.
