So far, in the 2019 Namescon auction, there are a total of 335 domains currently in the auction list.

Of those, there are only 6 8 new gTLD domains.

I thought there would be more with their partnership with .global. I guess the registrars aren't submitting the new gtlds they're all holding. No .globals in the mix?

Probably because of their previous experience with new gTLD sales took place on previous auctions.

There are ridiculously priced renewals for some (NOT ALL) new gTLDs with hundreds of thousands of renewal costs.

Imagine they sold a domain on an auction for 15K and the buyer didn't know that domain's renewal cost was 10K.

But again limiting the premium renewal fee with just $75 is something else..

What is more interesting is they may be "unable" to auction domains designated as premium by the applicable registry.

I took a look at the terms and conditions. I found this statement interesting, or rather troubling, for those who entered an agreement.

Ironically, a company cannot legally change its terms and conditions unless all parties agree. That is, a company cannot bind its customers to unknown future contract terms, because consumers cannot assent to terms that do not yet exist.

I guess I don't consider to submit after reading this ;

Directly selling a domain to an interested party within one year that was a direct or indirect result of sales and marketing efforts of a Live or Extended Auction; such as exposure generated from articles, press releases, advertising and sales any other activities.

If a policy violation occurs, commission fees are immediately due.

I personally decided to skip this year any submission of my new gTLD names there. If they want to get there some good new gTLD names with non-premium renewal fees, they should contact domain investors with some ideas/proposals, and not vice versa.

I am not going to submit my names there, and then wait, trying to guess which names will be selected (if any) by criteria which I do not understand really, while having my names basically blocked during this waiting period.

Also, I am not sure if I can compete with such quality keywords like "excite" and "boater", but that is maybe just me

The wording is at best confusing. It (now) says may be unable to auction... (whatever that means) and also says it applies to those designated premium by registry and then goes on to talk about the $75. So hypothetically an .icu designated as $16 premium, even though renewal is standard at less than $10, would be ineligible, or may be, as I read it. Or a club at $20 premium renewal is ineligible even though all .io that carry about $50 renewal are fine.

I also am amazed they ask people to submit on a website that is not https.

Does someone know who does the selection and if they have any expertise in ngTLDs?

I guess the selection made by Monte Cahn himself and his partner(at ROTD) Michael Berkens.

Found this about him on icannnwiki which I found interesting;

In a letter dated December 8th, 2011, Monte Cahn, along with twenty-seven other domain name industry representatives, wrote to Sen. Jay Rockefeller and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to support ICANN's new gTLD program.

I read that many of the ultra premium names are from one seller.

A couple of years ago it was full of ngtld nearly all registry submissions and were bid up by one and other if I remember. Last year very few as ngtld were already starting on the slide.

Thing is, there are some really great new gtld domains. The selection process had grown weak though. imo
