So you know how everyone is trying to predict the new .com and a lot of people thought that .co could possibly be the new .com. Well I guess that did not quite pan out because technically .co is still a ccTLD.

So that got me to thinking if maybe there was one that people had not thought of yet. Some of the top domainers in the world seem to think that .web might be the next one in line but personally I never cared for that because www already stands for world wide web so basically you would have world wide web businessname.web. Just kind of sounds wrong to me and I'm not sure if it is really the new .com.

So with the .com availability becoming more and more scarce what do you think will be the next big boom?

Now we are not looking for a replacement for .com but a prediction or suggestion for a new complimentary extension.

So upon some Looooooooooooooooooooong reflection I think I might have stumbled across a couple of great ones. I think it's only because I am a domainer that these came to mind and most ordinary folks would not think of it.

Here we go....

.com and the new complementary extension .dom (as in domain)

That would be my first choice, my second choice would be...

.com and the new complementary extension .dn (as in domain name)

In all the time I have looked at similar topics I have not seen anyone mention .dom but it almost makes sense that this could be a viable extension that both domainers and the general public could be happy with.

So what do you think? Could .dom or .dn be a possibility?

If not please list you favorite choice for a new world wide extension that would be your choice.

PS. To everyone thinking of flaming this topic with .com is king and similar content please refrain from that because I will ask a mod to delete it and keep everyone on topic. This topic is to discuss a viable extension that could handle the overflow from .com and the possibility of another REAL domain gold rush with another extension.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
While an interesting though, I envision ambiguity concerns with .dom. Difficult to disambiguate .dom from .com - I think it would unnecessarily muddy the waters.

Difficult to disambiguate .dom

I love the word you picked Joshua, I had thought of that and that is why .dn was my second choice.

Do you have a choice to add?

Disambiguation apparently is not a priority for ICANN.

See domain.com vs domain.cam for example.

But, .dom is not possible, because it is short name for Dominican Republic, so they own that abbreviation, even though it is not a domain. Same as .usa, .rus etc. are not possible.

.CO was supposed to be the new .COM, people dont think if it as a ccTLD, they just dont like it. So ... meh....

.do is Dominican Republic

Yes and especially .web & .website

Did you forget about the 1000 gtld extension they released because people were unable to acquire affordable .com’s, only to have those marketed with high premium, eap, and reserves.

You can’t be this bored, can you? Life is to short...

Or maybe .1, .2 .3.. ?

Insurance.1 = $40 000
Insurance.2 = $20 000
Insurance.313 = Not cheap!! Still a gem for Detroit end users!

IMO registrars will keep making money with any new extensions, but .com will be always on top until domains are replaced with something new...

Hopefully trend predictors can read this twice and push me their .coms. :xf.laugh:

You might be underestimating that people don't know it's a ccTLD. I think a lot of folks opening new companies and not picking .co are probably doing so BECAUSE it is a ccTLD.

You are either looking for a ccTLD or you are not. If someone is looking for a .com alternative a lot of times there is a hesitation to pick one that doubles as a ccTLD. That is why so many companies own the .com and the matching ccTLD per country. In that case a .co might not work as well as let's say a .dom or similar.

There is none, .net was the closest. That was an option most of the time and people still went out of their way to get a .com. Just go thru your bookmarks, how many .net sites are there. If .web came out, it would be in .net territory.

If it were run exactly the same as .com without a company like uniregistry in between it is foreseeable that we could find an addon to .com.

.com has been a by default first choice and for local businesses every country has its own extension.
.co is the second nearest choice but you already know that technically it is cctld....
IMO .net would have been there with .com. since it did not get that much importance and I do not think there will be any other .(dot) that can rule in near or ever for future....

Just put 4th choice in your options, name it non other then .com (you will find nearly all votes or that option)

It does not have to be an attempt to rule, it could simply be an add on to .com similar to what we were trying to do with .co

Yes but .net has a stigma that it has to be a network/technology or similar company. Same as .org meaning organization.

.dom would simply mean domain and adoption might be fairly high.

.net can be taken as "on the net" or "on Internet" as it represents you "on the net or take it internet".
.dom, yes it can serve some purpose but .net still i would prefer

Dominatrix. And to most people .net would be internet, or a net to catch stuff. Just like .web would be the web/internet. Then most people don't care, ask them what .com means. dom is too close to com, traffic bleed. I would never build and try to market a site on a .dom, the .com counterpart would appreciate it tho.

.net would probably sound the best to me if you went through all the alternatives. doubt you can find a better one.

apparently .icu was trying to be a new generic one like .xyz :xf.rolleyes:
I guess .xyz might have done better if it didn't sound kind of..childish or something. and it's 3 syllables.

.go might be good? if it wasn't two letters.
ha I googled .go domain, and this came up https://www.namepros.com/threads/is-go-domain-extension-the-answer-to-com.874610/

If i had to pick one, I would pick .xyz. I like that it does not represent a word in any language so is potentially representative of anything. I wish I owned more than the handful I have. I know, not many sale of significance since 2016.

If making up an entirely new extension to rival for the goto extension for the world, I might go for it if it committed to renewal rate controls for 10 years, had no premium names and a commitment to never designate any, was not run by a company, and was not under control of any country. Ideally it would be a 3 letter pattern that made sense in no particular language but was easy to remember.

My wish list is long, but it is that time of year! :xf.smile:

A few hundred million and 10 years of marketing you could get some serious traction. Enough time and money, you can build anything into a brand. Good luck.

Its called King Com for a reason. Only way anything will ever displace it is if someone basically builds a walled garden alt browser that grows a record breaking user base focusing on something new.

It would only work if it came from ICANN and was supported exactly the same way as a .com.

We already know what happens when private companies try to control an extension.

Watched the profit last-night. Marcus ripped a toy store owner for buying a .net when he could have gotten the .com for a few hundred.

Most people will just ad a geo suffix or word like "center", "outlet", etc.. Why not .co. or .cm ?? Because they all will leak business to the .com

ICANN already approved a thousand different alternatives.
