Domains sold by forum member repossessed by GoDaddy

I bought two domains, 28924.com and 82742.com, that were advertised by Omer Doron on NamePros.

https://www.namepros.com/threads/82742-com-28924-com-350-each-sold.1101500/

I paid with PayPal and the domains were pushed to my GoDaddy account. Three weeks later, I was notified that the domains were repossessed by GoDaddy. They told me,

"The original purchases of the domains in question were charged to an invalid payment method, resulting in the repossession of products and subsequent refund for initial cost. If the seller reverses charges for the services they purchased on your behalf, we “repossess” the purchase meaning the products are removed from your account. The original price of the domains must be paid in full before they may be returned to your account. We offer you the option of purchasing the domains for the original price of $761.34. This price is the cost of the original receipts connected to these domains which has been refunded.".

The Seller is claiming that they bought the domains from someone, and they weren't the ones that paid with the invalid payment method or did the chargeback. The $761.34 GoDaddy wants is actually more than I paid for the domains. The Seller claims I'm trying to get a refund from the wrong person, because they didn't do anything wrong. I feel it's their responsibility, since they sold them to me. They should go after the person they claim they bought them from.

Originally he said he would give me a refund after he verified the information with GoDaddy. Then he said he wouldn't do it because he thought they were stolen. Then he asked me to post here anonymously and he would issue me a refund if he was convinced it was 100% the right thing to do. When I asked him what it would take to be 100% convinced, he wouldn't answer.

I opened a dispute with PayPal. He lied in the response, claiming GoDaddy told me there was something wrong with my account. GoDaddy never told me there was anything wrong with my account. They just gave me the option to buy the domains back from them. It's an option, not a debt I owe them.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
but can't domain reposession happen on basically all registrars?

As promised, Undeveloped sent the refund to Omer and he issued me a refund. I edited the title to remove his name. Thank you to Undeveloped.

Re:
Those who feel strongly might want to lobby NamesCon about who is running the auction. I realize late for any change, but any effort would at least send a message.

It would appear that the post from Konstantinos about the NamesCon auction switching to GoDaddy from NameJet is not correct:
https://onlinedomain.com/2018/11/26...scon-domain-name-auction-switches-to-godaddy/

In a tweet overnight Monte Cahn confirmed that RightOfTheDot and NameJet would be handling the NamesCon auction again this year (although GoDaddy would provide some of the names from their portfolio).

I can see the confusion, because the original call for domains (now changed) clearly listed that GoDaddy would be 'provisioning' them, although it also listed NameJet as sponsoring auction, which was confusing.

Anyway, just wanted to correct the wrong impression that the NamesCon auction this year was being handled by GoDaddy.

I got ripped off the by the same clown on undeveloped, although for a lesser amount, they promised me a refund also, still nothing to date.

It sucks as I wasn’t going to say anything as the exchange really helps people sell domains quickly for fast with low commission, but clowns like this ruin it for everyone.

No, the original seller, 99.9% of namepros sellers are more honest than the majority of people online. Nothing to do with the above mentioned names, all these guys are standup guys.

The first seller who is long gone who caused all this mess, he was a namepros member here, although short lived I assume. Maybe he used his mommy’s credit card, I have no idea as nobody can really provide any details.

Has it been mentioned this person is @chatzo102 , they still have access to namepros, and by all accounts a positive feedback track record.

Yes, because when they posted the undeveloped invoices earlier on in this thread, it was the same seller on my invoice also, and my domain got repo’ed about 3 weeks ago.

I did the deal here at namepros and they wanted to use undeveloped to checkout, since they accept PayPal, thought it was easy enough, this person has some feedback trade history, so I had no idea they would pull this.

@chatzo102 was this persons username here.

Yes, good point, or mybe they just don’t know it yet as they haven’t been repo’ed.

Namepros is ripe with fly by night scammers these days, as domains become more valuable, the scams will become
More elaborate also.

Given Marriotts account hack of 500M people, can you imagine a underground network bidding up auctions via stolen cc’s, then flipping them quickly, and getting paid via bitcoin. Sounds like the perfect storm. Months later there is a repo roundup.

Here is the thing, all these easy checkout, payout options are here to help domainers, but being abused by scammers, will just make it that much harder for real people to transact, such a shame overall.

yes ...good points. sorry if I missed it somehwere, but your domain repossession occured on godaddy as well right?

that being said.. now that we know where and how these issues were created.. and can retrace the path.. maybe its time to discuss potential solutions? I suppose in these cases, repossessions can happen across all registrars.. not just gd...

Yes, my domain repo happend at Godaddy, I do have an account rep, and even they were surprised as they said don’t worry about it, everything should be fine, but then the hammer came down and they wanted about $3xx to return the domain. Usually these kind of grey area issues Godaddy has been pretty good with me, but with this issue it got over ruled. I honestly had no idea about this kind of over reach into an account. I would rather they email me, and let me know the situation, the cost, and go from there rather than just take it from my account. Treat me like a customer, not a one off groupon.

I fully agree.

I suppose logic dictates that these sorts of repossessions can happen across all registrars.. not just gd... ?

You said “since they accept PayPal” - you mean the scammer paid with PayPal? It’s harder to get away with a PayPal dispute via even chargeback unless the PP account used was fraudulent to begin with , such as perhaps a throwaway stealth PayPal account.

Hi,

No, scammer wanted to use undeveloped to checkout, and they accepted PayPal as a payment option which I used, no idea how they paid him out, my guess would be bitcoin, which is why everyone is scratching their head at every level, except the original al seller who is long gone.

I have no issue with bitcoin, it kind of sucks that good people get punished because of clowns like this. Undeveloped had a good system, but maybe don’t let newbie accounts, or people who are fly by night access such payout options, but people who are qualified users, not to take away such options as to punish them.

We see this time and again in this industry for the most part there are solid honest people, just scammer come, and go, and some longer, and make things harder for the good people.

Okay so scammer set up a godaddy account paid with credit card to godaddy for two separate domains. Listed domains for sale on Undeveloped. Sold to someone who sold to you in one transaction, sold to someone who sold to Draco in a second transaction. Original buyer (the scammer) did a chargeback to GoDaddy and then GD reclaimed the domains from innocent third party buyers, from you and from Draco.

GoDaddy (predictably) refused to make good on anything to anyone.

Undeveloped promised you they would make good on the transaction but never did. Undeveloped did make good on the Draco transaction.

Did I get it all right?

Huge props to @undeveloped.com for giving restitution, when they were not accountable or obligated to do so.

Six days ago I already informed you that we'd refund you. Based on your message 4 days ago I assume you missed it. We refunded you on the same day we received your Paypal account.

PS: the screenshots above are edited to leave out information/replies that shouldn't be shared publicly.

PS2: all clients affected by the same situation have been refunded. We're pretty consistent in our policy.

Take care,

Reza
