When Trump Estates [dot] com appeared on the expired list a few months ago I was wary, but it had no federal trademark registered so on drop day I plunked down my $8.47 and hand registered the name, thinking that I would create a satire site for it one day. I put it on Sedo at $997 in the meantime.

Next thing ya know, I get the email from Sedo that it's been sold, and they have requested to be invoiced --- at Trump Tower.

I'm a little sad because I had some great ideas for the site, but a happy that I got a payment from him without having to touch his ____.

That's life as a domainer, folks!

According to the stable genius himself it's "the best domain name in the history of the internet!"

Would have been fun if the buyer requested to be invoiced at the Kremlin. :xf.grin:

ALSO -

I've requested to Sedo that I be excused from providing an invoice in this case, because, "I am aware that several officers of the buyer organization have recently pled guilty to several felony level financial crimes, and they principal of the organization is currently under FBI investigation for multiple felonies."

In any case, I want to thank Sedo for "being my Michael Cohen" in this deal, and they certainly earned their $100 on this one!

wow.. that means it could have gone for a lot more than $995. Could have been a high 4 figure / 5 figure deal. I see it is now redirecting to trump.com!

The filing fee for a domain dispute is $1,500 (last I checked). When you go above this, litigious people often sue instead of just buying. I'm aware of at least one case a few years ago where someone sued several domains for the same name, but different TLDs, and even though it was a questionable claim (was not exact match to the trademark) everyone lost their domains and legal fees... except me. I had it priced at $1500, and they paid that amount, no questions asked. Greed can cost you a lost sale and more.

You got really lucky there!

I'd say for them $997 is like gratuity for reserving it and not asking some insane amount. Good deal, surprised they didn't own it already.

Nice one, and as you say Not being greedy - leads to a fast and speedy sale without any hassle.
Lets just hope there wont be a surge in 'Trump' registrations that just don't have the same significance

I will never understand why people buy domains like that. Had I been Trump I would have done...

Estates.Trump.com

or

Trump.com/Estates

I've never had Sedo accept our few 'trump' names in the past -- they did not accept them due to trademark issues. Surprised they accepted yours.

Congrats. Was it on Sedomls Premium or just Sedo(mls). Was it referred from another registrar or not?

Commission was 10%, so I assume just mls.

Ok, let me guess how this might have heppened. They add trump to their keyword list, and get regular messages from Sedo, and quickly scan the list, and check if there is anything interesting. They can miss something which they would normally find interesting. So, removing and adding the same domain many times a month may increase chances of selling. Who would visit Sedo just to buy a domain: I think noone would do it. People visit Sedo through parking, and then Sedo tries to convert that visit into a sale.

Nice insight, thanks!
