What is your approach when you are interested in a domain name which is registered but has a website which is actually neglected (copyright 2001, flash and nothing is working). How do you approach them to in order to get the domain?

Hello,

Here's an example:
Hi {name},

I'm interested in buying the {domain} domain name from you, excluding your website, content, and other assets. I noticed that the website hasn't been updated in a while and that you may not need this particular domain any longer. If that's the case, perhaps we can come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

If we do reach an agreement, then you could still use a different domain name for your existing website (optional). We can talk more about that if it helps.

Are you open to selling only your domain name?

Regards,

{name}
{company}
{phone}

We hope that helps.

I have purchased two similar and have NEVER started dialogue with the domains.

I usually approach and say I have a similar website idea and if they are willing to sell the website. When they ask me if I want the domain I tell them I have a domain in mind but would be interested in theirs to forward it to mine.

Now the emphasis is on database etc and usually I can get the whole deal under 1k. If I had approached them on just the domain it would have sparked them to research it to establish value. I find on old websites the owners just kind of shrug and give up the assets as long as you don't let on that the domain was of your main interest.
