Pixel.ca was sold at auction recently for $1750.00 and I was kind of annoyed I did not see it because I would have bid way higher than that.

I decided to punch it into the address bar today and this is what I saw....

www.pixel.ca

Picture0001.png

In my opinion there are some real issues with this because it gives the false sense to whoever buys an address that it's theirs to keep for as long as they pay. Personally I think someone will end up buying this domain and then the current owner will have to wait out the year terms with the email clients.

Or maybe he plans to really turn this into a service and I scratch my head at that because it limits any resale potential.

In the real world I don't think there are a ton of people scrambling to get a [email protected] email address so this whole thing puzzles me a bit.

Personally I would have outbid most everyone on this domain if I would have had the opportunity to do so. I paid 5k for protocol(dot)ca which is not as good but I actually developed it. The pixel domain has more potential than my domain but using it in the way he is doing is going to tie it up in limbo until contracts run out.

I guess I am ranting a bit here because I did not get the domain so jealousy does rear its ugly head a bit :xf.laugh: :xf.laugh:. I'm a huge google pixel fan and this would have been a conquest domain for me.

Footnote...

Here is an actual picture of the Pixel devices I use when I travel....

Anyways.... all in good clean fun, wishing I was the lucky recipient but I do wish the new owner of this powerhouse domain all the best. (y) (y) (y)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Does anyone know how much these guys make from email schemes like this, as I see a lot of expensive properties go this route.

I can't see it paying the bill, but I guess it's better than parking (and less risky) and still allows some freedom to sell.

1990s business model, people bought up surname .coms to rent email addresses on them.
I would not assume this is an offer specific to this name, they probably have a parking script that automatically can do this with any domain.

But yes the fine print would be pretty important for anyone renting one of these, just what service, privacy, and continuity would be offered. Wouldn't touch it myself for email.

Also at least in USA there are TMs on the single word pixel, for example:

Word Mark PIXEL
Goods and Services
IC 016. US 002 005 022 023 029 037 038 050. G & S: Envelopes; Gift bags; Invitation cards; Masking paper; Paper banners; Paper cake toppers; Paper cocktail umbrellas; Paper decorative garlands for parties; Paper flags; Paper labels; Paper napkins; Paper party decorations; Paper tablecloths; Temporary tattoo transfers; Tissue paper; Wrapping paper

The TMs might be a good reaon for the domain owner to at least appear to offer a good or service on the domain that is not covered by TMs. Just wondering now, what class of goods would you use to TM an email service and has anyone done that?

Predictably Google have a USPTO trademark on many classes of goods on the single word "pixel". Classes IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038

But not approved yet - look at this:

Filing Date October 12, 2017
Current Basis 1B
Original Filing Basis 1B
Published for Opposition October 2, 2018
Owner (APPLICANT) Google LLC LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY DELAWARE 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View CALIFORNIA 94043

WTF, how can it say published for opposition on October 2 this year when today is 14 Sept?

You are correct sir.

Look at the "Hover" business model implemented by Tucows.

Anyone who implements this strategy should take care, because Tucows has lost a domain once because they redirected it to Hover instead of using the domain itself as the product. Therefore the UDRP panel decided that it was not being used, and it was transferred to a complainant.

Thought I'd get myself a meg@pixel email address (available, yay!) but it turned out it is a $950/year payment (nay!).

Greed is good when it work,
i think 100-200$/year will work , 950$ is just too much for an email address

Yeah, if you were in the market for $950 email addresses, why not just buy PIXEL.CA for $1800?

Personally, I think this is just an anti-UDRP method to keep potentially infringing ads off it, not promote a sale price, but still keep it visible. I've seen this with a LOT of valuable domains that are word or last name related.

In retrospect, after reviewing some of the comments.....

With the trademarks on pixel and the deep pockets of google I'm probably better off that I did not bid on this domain. It may be a hard resale for the new owner because if it's used in any way with websites, phones, computers, technology etc google will come after you with guns a blazing.

Just thought of something....

Technically he is competing with gmail which is a google service and pixel is a google trademark

There is already enough here for google to take him out

It's pretty hard to jump business sectors like that with a specific product, even with Google lawyers.

If Google were named Pixel, then the comparison would be apt.

But you are right that it does limit the resale possibilities, as anything phone, tablet, computer, portable tech device, etc. related would be eliminated.

there is nothing for google, unless he has an offer that mimics Google logos and brand

you can sell whatever you want without problem, don't be paranoiac about trademark

pixel is a dictionary word, you can register Apple.New-gtlds and conduct business selling apples. nobody will come after you

Don't be too sure about that. Pixel will be trademarked by google and ANYTHING that even remotely looks like a google product and service will be protected by the trademark. This guy is offering email addresses and google does that. In court the person with the deeper pockets will probably win and with tools like wayback machine the new owner of pixel.ca has probably already made his first mistake. If google decides they want the domain the $1,800 the owner spent on it will pale to what he will have to spend to defend it. I would have tossed up a page marked "Under Development" and been done with it.

Pretty sure TM law does not work this way! IANAL but TMs are for specific classes which means just cos Google has the Pixel phone, TM will not extend to their e-mail or other services unless they have a TM for those areas of business (assuming they are in a different category. I've not checked). In this case, yes, it is possible that e-mail service and the categories that Pixel is trademarked are the same and in that case, the owner might be in trouble.

Btw, Pixel is trademarked in a host of categories in the US and likely in other countries (I've not checked for other countries) - https://www.trademark247.com/tm-pixel.html

You can see what those classes of goods cover at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_(Nice)_Classification_of_Goods_and_Services

Some of those as IC classes cover yarn and textiles and kitchen utensils! Not to mention lace, artificial flowers and false hair. Class 36 covers insurance and real estate. But possibly only class 038 could cover email as it refers to Telecommunications.

I doubt it, as any valid TM has to be in use, and I haven't seen Google advertising an online Pixel Email Service. They would only come after someone if they released a Pixel personal electronic device.

it's the classic "apply for everything and we'll sort if out later" and I doubt many of those will get approved or Google will ever care. What they fear is NOT applying for a TM and then a year later deciding to actually launch something in that area.

Who knows, someone at Google probably identified "DIY Crafts" as a heavy search term and figured it doesn't hurt to have all your bases covered.

I think they want to be the only ones offering hand-knitted wool covers for Pixel phones.

Or maybe wigs you can hide your phone in, or charge it there?

Agree, it's a nightmare waiting to happen for email clients, many of whom likely won't realize the inevitability of losing their accounts/addresses.

$950/yr for an email address? Is that for real?

Agreed. Only strengthens my point ;)
Also, my point was just a caveat as I'd not bothered to perform a full research on this aspect and topic

What if you own Pixel<keyword> dot com domains for dozen+ years and are holding them / for sale? Can they come after them?
