Hello..

I have to make an investment of $1,000 in domain names.
I currently hold a portfolio of 100-200 .CO as an experiment to wait for outbound.
Have a liquid cash flow from geo domain names.
I wish to diversify in another field - maybe new gTLD, aged domain, buy some from aftermarket or something else.

What would your suggestions be?

@Arpit131 Just intrigued, what kinds of .CO names did you invest in, LLL.cos or generics? Not looking to buy but just interested :)

I'd invest in either 1 or 2 .com domains bought in the auctions. .com of course.

I would have bought 50 beautiful CVCVC.com for 2 years and priced each of them $1000.

Do you mean beautiful CVCVC.com (suppose premium) at $20 each?
Dont know if it can happen...

Pay renewals it is easier to ask for a K when they have to wait forever for it.

I would spread it across 3 names at auction or privately

But you need to know what your buying with out the proper knowledge or guidance you will probably lose your money.

I personally, would buy a 3 letter .com, even if it contains a number.
I think they are valuable assets and i think you can get one for ~1k.

It would need to contain a number to get one for $1k or under

I think it perhaps depends on your risk tolerance and time frame for the investment? If risk tolerance is low and the time frame short, I would probably go into something like NNNNN.com but only when they can be secured at good prices (for the number combo) as the difference is often not much on these assets between buying and selling price.

If however, the time frame was longer and risk tolerance higher, I would probably try to find a niche that is in infancy, but a researched view shows that it may increase dramatically. Identifying these are challenging of course! I think that genetics, everything from gene therapies to genetic engineering (CRISPR) to forensics to ancestry services is one possible area.

Another area that I like is the simpler, happier, more mindful life movements. It seems to have gone largely unnoticed, but so far in 2018 but 57 sales including word 'happy' YTD with a very decent average price of $1624 on NameBio (although median much lower). A topic that gets a lot more attention, for comparison, sales including word 'cannabis': 70 sales with $471 average price (clearly other words like marijuana in niche, but also happiness etc. not included with happy).

I do see promise of increasing use in ngTLDs and potential, although also difficult to forecast what would be sound investments. If you did decide to go in that, I would concentrate mainly on single words with a great match between the word and the extension, but I am stating the obvious here. If investing in ngTLDs I might look where there are good deals on multi-year extensions, so you have more time to try to sell and your future costs are fixed. Not sure if it is over but there was a 3 yr good deal on .online recently at NC, and Radix sometimes offer 5 yr rates at good amounts through resellers. The probability of even a good ngTLD selling in any one year is probably of order of 1/3 (or even less) of that of a solid com, so maybe 1 in 300 or so. Therefore odds are time will be needed.

I mean in essence one needs to look at costs and probability of sale and likely return, but I know you know that!

Best of luck, no matter what choice you make.

i was a little confused by the post saying "a three letter, even if it contains a number" but I think perhaps the meaning was LLN domains, and they certainly are in that price range. Over last year they have varied from $109 to $27,000 with an average price of $2092, although the median is $1101 so some of those (LLN) are available. However, the trick is to find one in $$$ range that is worth high $$$$! But @Kate is absolutely right about LLL, with the least expensive in last year on NameBio $3500.

ps Time machines are always helpful to have too, so glad I bought mine! :xf.cool:

A thousand bucks of "spare" money ?

I would risk it by buying well thought out expires and going to that mysterious NetSol $1 deal to get them.

Turn off auto-renew. Put them up for sale everywhere at $1,000 BIN. Sit back and wait.

But that's me.....

I know you said you have to invest it in domain names, but the conservative investor could also consider an ETF. You can even get one if you want it to be a COM, although it will be in commodities, that are riskier than stocks and bonds, although probably less risky than domains! :xf.wink:

Being serious, would be interested to know why the OP feels has to invest exactly that amount, should he care to share with us. The OP already says has a fair portfolio of co and geo, I guess implying diversifying with this $1000 is one goal? (or more speculative and higher possible returns?) What do people think about io - has it peaked or is that a good place to invest still?

Domain names my friend! Crypto portfolio is different.

@Arpit131 Just intrigued, what kinds of .CO names did you invest in, LLL.cos or generics? Not looking to buy but just interested :)

I am mostly experimenting with pronounceable name. Trying the strategy which one of the members here pointed out. No premium or generic. Names like Florally and so on.

I'll consider this one definitely.

i'll look into this. As @stub also pointed out, I'd be looking into this. Looks like a decent option.

That is extremely insightful @MetBob
I'd be keeping all this in mind when making the investment. Will research on such keywords. Long term niche is not the plan for now, but maybe in the first quarter of 2019, I'd be investing aggressively in niche based domains with a long term plan.

I know you said you have to invest it in domain names, but the conservative investor could also consider an ETF. You can even get one if you want it to be a COM, although it will be in commodities, that are riskier than stocks and bonds, although probably less risky than domains! :xf.wink:

Thanks for the advice again regarding ETFs. I am a derivatives trader by profession. So, that side of the risk and diversification is taken care of ;)
Yes, diversification is one of the goal. Also, experimentation the other. I have been quite some time into domaining and mostly focused on outbound and geo-domains. So, thought to diversify or rather experiment with something that has either inbound value or quick liquidity. I hope that answers the question.

I have spent half of that budget in last couple of days on GD auctions.

I bought 1 LLLL - i/x/l/g.com for around $200
1 brandable that I had little competition for - Clin/icle/com costed me $50
And then around 20 names from closeouts at around $16 average ($13 to $20).

Some of those (all .com): Cohort/y, Room/Delivery, Mini/Lorry, Luxury/L, ai/gain, venom/usa, mow/zilla, BJ/D8 (Beijing Date), etc.

Phew! Boy. You weren't kidding in your first post when you said "I have to make an investment of $1,000 in domain names."

I liked Clin/icle and Venom/USA. I didn't care for the rest of your closeout purchases. I think IXLG is not bad. You should make money on it if you hold it for a while.

History here shows closeouts often have hidden gems, buy another 20 names.

I think you should have put it in quotes if you were not the OP. Because it looks like this came from you :)
