How to gauge the potential value of different extensions

As I learn more about domaining and how the professionals make money, I have been some what curious about where extensions other than .com and .net land in terms of value. I don't want to make the beginner mistake of over paying or wasting money on a different extension.

For an example let's say cognitive.business is available for the reg fee, cognitive.life is available for the reg fee as well. Most other extensions are taken with cognitive.tech available at a premium of $10,800. Some of the other extensions for this specific name are for sale by other domainers in the $20.000+ range.

Where would that place the value of the cognitive.app extension? The reason I ask, there are some other domain names in the .app extensions I've looked at that are available. Most or all of the other extension are not available for registration and there are sales of that specific domain name in namebio for varying amounts depending on the actual domain name.

Any help on guidance on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Begin by looking at sold prices of the domain extension. Do not invest in any domain extension like .app that doesn't have an adequate sales history to draw conclusions from. All extensions without sales history are much too speculative.

You can buy other extensions like .app but accept that that's not investing, it's gambling. Gambling is fun, addictive, and someone will win... but most lose.

Domain investing is nonexistent without strong comps to substantiate the investment. :bookworm:

Those are my basic thoughts on it. The reason I ask is there are some decent sales history for varying extensions. .com is definitely king, trailed by .net, .org and so on. The value in different extensions tends to drop, the .tech might sell for 20-25% of what the .com does, others might sell for 10% or less of the .com. That of course depends on what the actual domain is and how much demand there is for that specific domain.

I did purchase cognitive.app for two reasons 1. cognitive technologies is a growing industry and 2. there is also the cognitive therapy and learning industry. There were some decent sales of two word domains using cognitive.

I'm starting to get the feeling that if I want to make money at this, I'm going to have to purchase one word, or 3-5L .com and let their values mature.

That's one way, but there are others:
One word, as short as you can afford, and easy to spell domain names in any top selling TLD (sort by "Number of sales"). The lower down that list the TLD, the more popular the word must be.
