I was watching hoarders: buried alive and the "aha moment" hit me towards the end. How many domainers are living with the exact same character flaws that propagate the same qualities, or lack thereof, of a real life hoarder?

There are many attributes that are similar, concerning the tendency to hold on to crap that is utterly worthless to anyone other than the owner. A quick looksee at expiring domains is evidence to insight of these personality trait "similarities".

As contradictory as this may sound, (dropping these domains would be evidence to the contrary) I suspect that a large number of drops by domainers are both attributed to (not keeping up with ones' portfolio) and (simply trading these terrible names for acquiring even more auspicious names).

Now, this is a characterisation mostly garnered towards new timers who have little to moderate experience in domaining. I think traits are extremely parallel to real life hoarders. Realistically, for every random nonsense domain name droppes, how many are still being renewed out of blind faith that there is "someone" out there that really wants to buy 'grupofu3l.com" eventually?

Is this simply an issue of pride? Is it so hard to realise you dove in and made a $x,xxx mistake?

There is no point of no return in domaing. you can start over. The guilt and pain can be reversed and there are numerous stories here to support this.

Discuss.

Domainers don't scale well horizontally and some domain names are for future development projects.

Of course, the more one renews a domain name, the more valuable the domain name seems.

I've been actively domaining for 5 months(seems much longer sometimes) and I actually thought about this about the 2nd or 3rd month. I had some pretty bad names that I'd either overbid on and won or just bought due to pure speculation. I have some learning to do and I think once I develop a sharper eye of what to look for, the hoarding will end and I will be much more discerning as to what domains I hold.

I want to clarify that I'm not directing this towards future or "green" concepts.

But i am honestly surprised at outdated or otherwise random/language barrier/nonsense mistake domains that somehow get registered and put on auction, some with ridiculous unrealistic bn or reserve prices.

Do not fall in love with your names. Especially crap ones.
Warning! This will cause you to hoard.

At least this is what they say to prospective buyers :)
(But I buy name for future development projects too)

It's called infatuation and the sunk cost fallacy :)

Hoard... pigeon shit :)
I agree, don't fall in love with your domain names. Don't be a domain collector, be a domain seller :)

If you have some really good names it's pretty hard not to fall in love with them :xf.laugh:

As far as holding on to them.... well I sure won't sell them cheap so the only option is holding them. :xf.smile:

Patience is a virtue, the good domains will eventually sell, hoarding is the only option until they sell :xf.wink:

heh. I have a problem with falling in love with themes.

The worst are the late night mass buys. Never buy a domain after midnight. Its gonna be a fail.

I drop the names that I no longer think can sell. I think it’s nice to improve the quality of the portfolio every year, not just collecting names (and increase the renewal fees).

Domain hoarding is an expensive hobby. :-P

I try not to be. Domain hoarding is a dangerous hobby because the renewal fees will eat you alive. Now I try to talk myself out of buying a name instead of blindly buying it. Quality over quantity is so important in domaining.

I do not like to sell my names for cheap and I am IN for the long-term game - so probably some people would call this approach a "domain horder", who knows? :)

Only with domains that I think are worth something.
