NTLDstats.com showed that new TLD registrations peaked at about 29.5 million registrations in April 2017. Nine months later Namestat.org shows new TLD registrations down about a third from its peak to under 20 million registrations. Having dropped 100% of my former .biz holdings and about 90% of my former .Net regs and about 70% of my former .TV names, it appeared inevitable that a considerable decline would ensue in what appeared to be an unnecessary explosion in new extensions. Releasing one new extension every couple years like .CO or .CLUB could work but flooding the market with hundreds of new TLDs so quickly was doomed from the start. What holds for 2018? I suspect total registrations will continue to slide. On the other hand do we need hundreds of cryptocurrencies?

Adding so many all at once was a mistake, adding some where there is confusion (like plurals) was a mistake, and some extensions (like .sucks) was simply a mistake!

I think we should not overstate however the statistics. Most of the drop has just been in a few extensions, and overall if you look at all TLDs, .com is stagnant, .net and .info both down slightly, while a number of the new gTLDs have significant year over year growth.

Here is data from the folks at CENTRstats for the largest 30 TLDs (of all types) showing year over year growth.

• com 73
• new gTLD 8
• io 6
• country code 5 (see also below)
• net 3
• org 3
• co, cc and tv 1 each

Of course it will change as each new day is added. While .com dominates, it is nice to see the spread in the early going of 2018. Of course .io seems off to another good year so far with a number of $$$ sales so far.

Currently a new gTLD is in 2nd place, an io in 4th place and a .net in 6th place near the top of the charts for 2018.

Off topic: I have sold 3 new gTLDs since New Year and none are reported at Namebio (but at least two of them at this forum).

I’m not saying that sales of these are booming or so. I just want to point out that Namebio is only showing fragments of the actual sales.

There is no secret that .com sell much more than any other extension. All domainers know that. That is the simple reason that .com are more frequently added to Namebio and Dnpric.es.

Ps. I just sold my forth new gTLD in 2018, for $2500. It is not listed at Namebio either.

with all due respect, if your saying that all domainers who deal with ngtlds are as successful as you, then I do not think you're right.

you're probably one in million ngtld investor who with proper skill and good timings manages these numbers. which still would leave average sales, reported or not, at very low and not very significant figures.

I just wrote that not all sales are not reported at Namebio (and it applies for all kind of extensions). Nothing else.

you wrote you are not alone in your ngtld sales/success. my reply mentioned that people like u with much success in ngtld may be fewer than you think. therefore non reported ngtld sales may be fewer than you think also. which was your point I believe.

Most of the names on the favorite five new Gtld thread will be dropped over the next several years. Newbies just don't think in terms of business use. If there is no business which would ever want to brand their business on that keyword even if it were a .com why bother? However there are several which at least made sense - assuming renewals and pricing are reasonable....

I stop regging ngtlds since last year... From now on I will just reg .COM domains.
I keep renewing some of my ngtlds, and keep them for long term until they sell for big price.
