I have never been found of Adsense or the other monetization solutions.
First of all, the ads are a distraction to readers.
They are often creepy and intrusive.
They deface your website.
Worse, your website may be used to promote products or services that you do not endorse, or even contents that you find objectionable.
Simply put, I think it's not worth it if you are not making good revenue. If it's making you $15/month in revenue I say forget it. Waste of traffic. Keep your traffic to yourself or be more selective.
And if it's your primary source of revenue you have another problem: you are completely dependent on Google (or whatever competitor), which is not a healthy position.

I understand that bloggers need money to maintain a site that is otherwise not profitable. But if you are using a website to provide professional services, putting unnecessary layers of advertising is bad taste, a distraction, and makes you look cheap. (Just imo).
You might even end up promoting competitors...

Now consider this:

I am not prude, actually I find it funny but I wasn't expecting that. I don't think it projects the image of professionalism you would want.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Whatever you are doing correctly, to me thats makes it worthwhile if you can get passive income of more than $1k a month, I guess I should invest some development time into it. Even though what impedes my progress in those narrow verticals I am versed in, all seem so saturated and are already ranked.

What are those sites doing that you could do better? What are they not doing? Look at them as a user - what's missing or what annoys you about them? That's your opportunity.

This isn't entirely "passive" but I don't put a huge amount of time into it. Check prices and availability periodically, researching and adding new content each year ... traffic is entirely organic. (I should do FB ads or at least remarketing, but there's never as much time as I'd like for side projects.)

those ads were based on the content of the page (page about luggage shows luggage ads) but now everything is personalization and retargeting....you visited this site once so now im going to show it to you every chance i get until my advertisers budget runs out.

you can check your adsettings here
https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated?hl=en

you can also see what gender and age google thinks you are...

now they have a pay me money and ill show you less ads option
https://contributor.google.com/v/beta

Its amazing they created an adstorm that people hate and as a solution they allow you to buy a ad free pass..

talk about having a poison and selling its antidote!

Advertisers can control that to make it less obnoxious - if they know how (or want to ...)

Contributer only works with "participating sites." I think I posted something about that here when they first announced it - publishers get compensation from the user's per-page fee.

my background is advertising and while I understand may people take action on these ads I also know that forcing them will have a negative and reverse effect.

On remarketing a lot of advertisers are lazy and don't limit it to a reasonable number of times displayed over a limited period of time. And yes, if people feel too "stalked" they'll never visit again.

agreed....lots of ad rev wasted on lazy settings or recommended setting in adwords. I do however like the new native ads in adsense.

AdSense doesnt bother. I visit some websites with ads and have no problem reading the content, but all this shortners and popups appearing each time you click menu or READ MORE do make just close the website and never come back again.
