This is more a toward the mods. Wouldn't it be a great idea if people actually search before they post here (as in a requirement/rule)
I mean duplicates just look bad, and it can remove so much of the clutter.

Just an opinion.

We are going to add a feature that shows similar threads during the process of creating a thread. We expect that will help avoid most duplicate threads from being created.

Until then, please report all duplicate threads so that we can merge/close them.

I would say that most people will just ignore these suggestions as they believe their question will be answered better if they open a new thread. If on the other hand, you close threads with a warning it might deter people from making new duplicates. BTW did you think about implementing a more versatile search option?

you close threads with a warning it might deter people from making new duplicates

We already do that, as well, but we mostly depend on reports from members to bring them to our attention.

I believe the "similar threads" feature will help, because it's faster to read a thread with the answer(s) than to create a new thread and wait for someone else to answer it. Not everyone will think that way, but it should help.

Only my thoughts about duplicate threads..because the domaining industry is changing so fast..last year (6 months etc) Q&A threads might be outdated.

Funny that threads like this are just a way to add the "punish them for doing this"...

I don't think it's about being a new or old member. On the contrary, an old member should know about the "search before you post". It's just a guideline.

So instead of having single threads of "how do I sell my domain(s)", how this or that is done and other posts that can just be done with by merging into one topic.

That's a good guideline. It's also standard forum etiquette, but most users don't know about it. Even as a rule, many don't know about it. It usually takes a member creating a duplicate thread, another member reporting it, and then staff getting involved before the member learns about it. However, with thousands of new members continuously signing up, it's a continuous cycle, which is why we favor the feature that shows similar threads and may lead to them posting in an existing thread instead of creating a new one. If they read the similar threads and those don't meet their needs/questions, then they can continue to create a new thread.

We're always open to other ways to solve problems, so please feel free to suggest them anytime. We consider all feedback from all members, even if you're new to NamePros.
