Why are you so stupid?

I hate you. >:(

@Everyone who bids days before auction end time.

Now everybody has the domain on their watchlist :xf.cry:

Because of you >:(

How can someone be so dumb.

You've invited more competition, if few people saw the auction you would've had better chance at winning it for cheap. How stupid you are. :xf.frown:

If names don't reach a proper sale price at auction, then sellers won't use the auction, so everybody loses. :)

The 'seller' of an expired domain is the registrar and the registrar will have to auction the domain doesn't matter if a LLL.com is selling for $100. Only the registrar loses, but the registrar never paid for the domain. So what these advance bidders do is help the registrars make more money.

Not the right thing to do imo.
The other day I bid on iactivity dot com. I had a number I wanted to pay. As we got closer to auction end the bidding went nuts. Now maybe I was wrong to do this. And maybe my valuation was wrong on the name! But I then said if I can't have it for X I'll bump it up some. Now the bump up some carries risk of course. Risk for me of paying too much. But here is the thing. If I would pay 500 for iactivity, if 550 is too much then I don't need to pay 500, for EXAMPLE! If 200 is my max then 220 should not be a deal breaker.

But to your specific point. Why do you think it is either wrong or not right? If 200 is my max and we get to 200 why should I let anyone have it at 205? There are a few logical reasons why I should press it a little. I may get it for just a little more. It does increase the comps in the area;) It creates competition which is good for business.

I understand you don't want registrar to make more money. To be clear, and I do not think it will make a difference to you, I am talking about all auctions not just expiring closeouts!!

Can you define max in this context ? I thought "max" means "I won't go over this number no matter what" :)

I don't think so. Competition will not make the domain better, it just gets you to pay more ! If the other parties were not involved in the auction, you would have won the exactly same domain for peanuts !

@Haris, dont hate peoples. For every domain need min 2 days to end. If bids so many and sellers need buyers. Dont worry, be happy.

Thread is getting derailed.. you should better create a new thread if you want to discuss this further.

Okay I won't hate those freakin' advance bidders, I will just end this by calling them stupid idiots who don't know how to participate in auctions :xf.grin:

When I set a ceiling I try to have the discipline to respect it.

If its 200, I cant say 220 is ok too because that sets a new ceiling. From there logically 240 would become ok aswell and so on ..

Its better to set a max and keep it.

Yes - I thought this thread was about all auctions.

It's good if the registrar makes money from these auctions, it means he can reduce transfer and registration prices to attract more names. It' just a pity that reducing renewal prices is counter productive.

I do win some domains by bidding early and adding a reserve price.

If you know how much you are willing to pay maximum, this is an excellent strategy. Not stupid.

Yes, at some platforms it will attract more bidders, but it will also scare away others that are bidding, only to find out that they are not reaching my reserve easily.

Also, I need to sleep sometimes. I live in Asia and do not want to stay up 5 A.M...

There are exceptions of course, if someone won't be able to get online at the auction end-time then they can bid few hours before when they were able to get online. Bidding days in advance is weird, as many members said above, it looks like those advance bidders don't want to win the domain at all.

Regarding the maximum price we are willing to pay, there are a lot of domains for which I am willing to pay $100 but I win them for $20 because I wait until the last moment. For some, time > $80 but I do this full-time so I have reminders which tell me this particular auction is going to end at this time so I'll open the auction link in a new tab 10 minutes before it. I have been able to win precious domains for cheap when no one else was looking! I know this doesn't happen all the time but when people bid days in advance, I have no doubt that my chance of getting a great domain for 10x cheaper than my maximum budget for it decreases!

Lowballing is in my blood (jk), I lowball not only domainers but registrars as well. :xf.grin:

I'm one of those guys, - that is bidding days before the auction ends. The reason is I am often too busy to check auctions every day, I travel a lot, plus I live in a different time zone (meaning auctions ends when I am not around a computer anyway). So when I come across a domain name I like I often just place a proxy bid for it, even when the actual auction date still is a few days away.

I know this limits my chances to win the domain and it is drawing more attention to the auction but it also protects me from getting fired up in a bidding frenzy and overpaying for the domain name.

I'm sure there are many others just like me.

@Haris Although I agree with your strategy of waiting late in an auction, so as to not draw attention to a name being auctioned, I do have trouble with you calling those that do "Stupid, "Idiots" "dumb". There are times that I end up doing so for logistical reasons. What it seems to be saying is that nobody's strategy is worthwhile unless you agree with it...you are the arbitrator of what is or is not a proper way to bid.

There are 2 types of people

1. People that bid in last 5 minutes

2. People that know how much domain is worth so they set proxy bid and walk away

Well if it says 'bidder 1' or something, you cannot truly conclude that the person is dumb. What if he is the richest man in the world and knows he can outbid everyone else if it came down to a fight? :xf.grin:
Seriously though, I try to snipe as well but I don't always have the time to play games. Sometimes I just bid my maximum days in advance and leave it at that, win or lose.

If you are like me, and your max bid is $1, then you have to leave it to the last minute. :)

My last 4 auction buys -

SingleParentCruises.com - $1
BitSteep.com - $1
UKstoves.com - $1
BridgesOfLondon.com - $1
Vortar.com - $1

Oh wait - that's 5, well you see why I have to stick to a $1 limit.

I did go mad and buy HostingProducts.com for $5, as I have a project for that, and one of those dreadful early bidders had put a dollar on it days before it ended. :)
