My wife thinks of my domaining as an hobby

Hello,

Even though I have told and shown her that about 50% of our household income (after fees and taxes) is generated from my domaining, she still insists that I spend too much time with it and that I should delete more names. I should also work more as a freelancing translator. A job that I actually 'hate', even though the income is ok too.

Our main income have been generated from internet for the last 15 years, so it's not a general anti-internet-digital thing. More that she think that domaining in general will probably fail, make us bankrupt, or something.

Do anyone have a similar, or perhaps a totally opposite, experience?

No one will marry me because of my stupid hobbies

My wife thinks it's an addiction. :xf.frown:

The problem with a lot of domainers is that they are re-invest their profits in buying more domains and are cash poor.

So it can be argued that their domain business is more of an 'addiction' than a 'hobby'.

Very few can earn a living because of the above.

Yeah, but not in my case. I altered my text slightly:

I think she see the translation as a "real job" as it's not involving any investments, just being paid by the hour.

If I have a choice I would delete her instead of the names.
One will bring you profit and happiness the other one only bring you troubles: whining, nagging, complaining...

The choice is clear.

Just keep secret accounts and don't tell her shit. Worked for 20 years of marriage. Less they know.. happier they are. They just care about the bottom line. Which is money to spend.

Women always say they want to know, but trust me, they don't want to know. It is too hard for them to comprehend. :)

Open the fridge and throw all the food out.
When she says hey where did everything go.
Say I quit domaining like ya asked our new grocery budget only allows Ramen Instant Lunch, get used to Chicken Flavor with no actual chicken in it.

People see a job as "legit" but a job is usually a clock in clock out scenario.

This "hobby" is harder than any job.

Most jobs end at 5pm leaving the office.

Domaining ? You eat sleep sh*t domain repeat even in your sleep you dream of domains to reg
You keep your mobile next to your bed "just in case".

Whois.com open and ready.

Domainers think faster than the average human. When trump tweeted Covfefe

What "normal" 9 to fiver would have thought to register it.

What about domainers who analyse who the candidates will for the next Potus?

Then register PresidentTrump.com or PresidentClinton.com

Before experts ever figure it out?

Then sell the domain for 6 figures? Years later?

Hobby? If this is a hobby? Then to hell with a job!

My current domain skills == Gambling.. Betting on anything which I feel good.. which may or mayn't turn out to be good.

Same here my family calls its my hobby.
You say 50% income but how much time are you spending on it, if 80% of your time she has a point.

A little hard to say, but an estimation would be approximately 35-40% of our total money-generating work hours.

Better than than losers at the nearest convenience store wasting $5-$30 on scratch offs. DAILY!

Yikes!

Domaining is like Pool aka billiards.

With SKILL you have an Edge.

It's very horrible choice, I think there is another where @Fancy.domains can tell her about domaining & freelancing and try to convince here about the profit he is getting from domaining.

Thankfully, my wife and I both like the domain industry and are actively involved in it together. So I don't have to worry about that type of situation. My advice would be to sit down with her in a quiet place and have the last years worth of income vs. bills with you. Go over it with her and by the end of it, if she still doesnt get the picture, then you may be at a stale mate and need to re-evaluate your options in compromising with her fairly so you both feel like you got a win. Maybe ask her to change something about herself or work load to keep things fair. ;)
