Hi,

Why are 4l.com priced higher than pronounceable 5l.com? It's not as simple as you think and there's something messed up with these prices...

For example, the current trend that everyone wants is 4l.com and there are 26 choices for the first letter, 26 for the second, 26 for the 3rd and 26 for the 4th. So altogether, there are 26*26*26*26 = 456,976 combinations. Domainers at the moment are going crazy for 4l.com compared to anything else (besides numerics) mostly because of Chinese herd mentality... couple years ago nobody cared about 4l.com chips, only happened because a few smart investors decided to buy them all up and create a higher floor price for this category.

In the western market do you really think corporate end users care if a domain is 4l or 5l? No - they just care about getting 'their' company brand and they will pay dearly for it. For example, Gavus.com is a better fit for any end user compared to gavs.com because it's pronounceable and easy to remember. But in today's market gavs.com will be 500 times more expensive for a floor price just because domainers (falsely) have it in their head that there is a much more limited supply of 4l.com so these are the most valuable...

Regarding pronounceable 5l.com domains (lvlvl.com) combinations there are only 21*5*21*5*21 (231,525 combinations). With vlvlv.com combinations there are only 5*21*5*21*5 (55,125 combinations)...

There are actually less pronounceable 5l.com compared to 4l.com. But for some reason brandable 5l.com are priced extremely low at the moment... but maybe not for long...

Why do domainers not see this? and why is there no 'expectations' of high prices for pronounceable 5l.com?

It's either going to end with some domainer buying up large amounts of pronounceable 5l.com and setting their own floor price (just like what happened with 4l.com chips)... or maybe domainers will clue in and start to price pronounceable 5l.com at the value they should be...

I'm fairly confident this will be the next gold rush... Why do so few domainers see the value in pronounceable 5l.com?

What do you guys think?

I think your math is fuzzy at best because you aren't counting ccvcc 5L's like flick or skits or chark etc. So that adds up to another 2.2 million possibilities. 4 L's are much rarer than 5L's and that simply is the reason for the price difference. I love pronounceable 5L's as brandables so I see your point, but I am afraid most of them will never be more valuable than a good pronouncable 4L as it's simply a numbers game! Companies like 4L's as acronyms for their businesses too. Good Luck with your liquidation sale as I was looking through your spreadsheet yesterday and you have amassed quite a nice portfolio! Cheers!

Very simple, Chinese think that 4L domains are limited and they can easily invest in them ( Buying 3L domains is too difficult to do than 4L).
For your calculation in 5L, you just calaculated " pronounceable " 5 L domains . So those domain pronounceable for Western people or Chinese ? If Western, you can get your answer : Do you want to hold 5L pronounceable domains without any Potential Buyers for years ? I'm surely No.

I'm willing to bet there's a very low xx,xxx amount of actually pronounceable ccvcc.com domains. 99% would be total garbage in the ccvcc.com pattern.

For example, how many pronounceable words can be made starting with cc? Pronounceable words starting with 2 consonants can't really start with q,x,y,z because no other consonant going with these letters. So there's 17 consonant options for the first letter.

Moving onto the second consonant - bcdfghjklmnpqrstv - the only real other consonant that can follow some of these is h and r from what i can see. so maybe 2-3 options for second consonant.

Same pattern would happen with the last 2 cc at the end.

so ccvcc.com patterns realistically only have around:
17*3*5*17*3 = 13,000 real pronounceable words

there would be the same or less for cvvcc, ccvvc, cccvv

Think my math is ok:

*456,976 total llll.com combinations

cvcvc.com = 231,525 combinations
vcvcv.com = 55,125 combinations
ccvcc.com = 13,000
cvvcc, ccvvc, cccvv = maybe 30,000 total actual pronounceable words.

*Just over 300,000 total pronounceable 5l.com words

There might be a few hundred more if you add in qu starting words or other rare combinations but over all there are less pronounceable 5l.com available overall, compared to the total amount of 4l.com.

I can see both sides of the coin so to speak

OK so LLLL. Coms are more limited and thus will be worth more sooner

But I much prefer a pronounce able brandable LLLLL. Com than four letters that don't fit or are not pronounce able LLLL. Com just because it's worth more

Those who know a bit about brandable will know that the true value in the brand is the hard work and effort put it over the years by its owner that makes a brand recognisable and valuable not what the domain costs

I found this on Google and it seems to make sense to me numbers wise, without thinking too hard about it, as it's Saturday and I'm not allowed to think too hard on Saturday, :xf.wink: but it's probably closer to this number than your number? That's just my gut! If anybody is a Linquistics expert they probably know for sure?
5L.coms
VcVcV = 86,400 --- ex: Abubo
cVcVc = 288,000 --- ex: Colum
ccVVc = 288,000 --- ex: Choop
ccVcc = 960,000 --- ex: Shuck
cVVcc = 288,000 --- ex: Toush
cVVVc = 86,400 --- ex: Booom
Total = 1,996,800 out of 11,881,376

GeorgeQuang -

Chinese just started investing in domains a few years ago... for reasons that I don't understand their market at the moment is just 4l.com and under (sure there's good prices at the moment but this may not go on forever).

But there's a reason almost all large Chinese companies have english sounding names = prestige.

There's not actually that many large Chinese companies with chip branded names. eg.
sinopec
saic
faw
dongfeng
lenovo
air china
mengniu
yili
baidu
china unicom
moutai
hisense
anker
haier
xiaomi
alibaba
huawei

Notice how almost all large chinese companies have english sounding names? You'll have a very hard time finding a Chinese brand that doesn't use aeiouv in their names.

How long do you think it will take for the Chinese to finally figure this out and start buying up brandable/pronounceable 5l.com?

thedot.shop - please see my calculations above - you're numbers are way off because they include a huge amount of cc that can't realistically be combined into actual pronounceable words.

ok platey thanks for bringing this up - let's have a look into how many options with Cvccv eg tifna And Cvvcv eg biexa

cvccv = 21*5*21*(2-3 options for these 4th c see post above for reasoning)*5 = 33,075 pronounceable word options

cvvcv = 21*5*5*21*5 = 55125 combinations but not all of these will be easily pronounceable

--
so totals for 5l pronounceable words:
cvcvc.com = 231,525 combinations
vcvcv.com = 55,125 combinations
ccvcc.com = 13,000
cvvcc, ccvvc, cccvv = maybe 30,000 total actual pronounceable words.
cvccv = 33075
cvvcv = 55125

Total 5l pronounceable words: 417,850
total 4l.com including chips: 456,976

there's going to be a few more like vcccv but these wouldn't result in many pronounceable words.

I'd say in total around 500k 5l.com pronouncable 5l word options in total.

Still doesn't explain the difference in price. if you take the chinese out of the market, is the next big thing for western domainers has got to be pronounceable 5l.com?

There's really not as many as people seem to think... and the majority are already owned by end users.

The letter Y is also sometimes used as a vowel in the english language as well! For example: Tryst, Thyme etc.

I sold upeva.com, laxil.com and eqoya.com to end users. Average sale price was about $2800 for each.
