Well 'regret' is a strong word; I'd say more accurately, I'm a bit uneasy and not sure how I should be looking at this. I don't want to be wasting my time and money.

I am feeling I should have just stuck with wordpress, instead of PHP. Selling domains is just one part of my online plan/interest: I like development, blogging on the site etc.. But php as far as I know doesn't have blogging, i can't just go in my admin and change designs like i can in wordpress. I have to make money and then pay somebody to make the simplest of changes. Maybe, this is where having a business partner who is technical would come in(except I'm a one man show).

I am starting to think php sites are terrible(I mean they look serious, but you are stuck unless you have money to burn) I tried wordpress before, but felt It needed a more serious look, but I think that's because I never had it custom done. And I can't just scrap the site because I invested so much time and finance in it.

  1. Are there ways to get a blogging system on a php site like mine?
  2. It just sucks that I can't move things around on the home page..
  3. If i want to showcase my own projects or brands, I can't just create a new page or add it to my homepage; I have to pay somebody who takes 3-6 months to it.
Am I being too impatient?
Should I look on this as a long term investment and development/improve it over time?
Am I wasting my time with this?
Does it have great potential?

Regardless, I know one day I'll do something great in this industry.

Thnx

php is a programming language. wordpress is a content management system. written in php.
i'm not sure what you mean by comparing the two...

Agreed with @4pm - wordpress is also written in php so not sure what you actually try to compare here.

You can always add a subdomain blog.yoursite , setup wordpress and blog away! :)

Im sure there there is a subscription service where you pay 79 bucks a month and they make as many changes to your site as you want. Although the name of the company escapes me Im sure you could google it.

You can achieve a similar site (if not better) using EFTY.

Then create a blog using wordpress such as blog.gotbrands.com

Will echo what @4pm said. You're comparing apples to oranges.

For a more "hands on" approach, why not learn PHP for free? Codeacademy is free, and I know there are many other free resources out there...

My advice is not to waste your time on a portfolio website, if it's just to showcase your own domain names. If somebody wants a domain name that you own, they will just visit the domain and take it from there. It doesn't matter where you park or host it.

Looks like I'm not allowed to add my website link here(so it was removed), but it's the same site that's in my signature.

Thanks, that may come in handy down the road. Hopefully I can find it.

I can get around, but I'm not too technical, at-least when it comes to coding and I've never used a sub-domain before. What does a sub domain allow me to use a wordpress template and link it to my main site?
If so, won't the design be inconsistent?

As for working together, I'll pm you in a bit. Thnx

Think of wordpress as an engine, not a 'look'.

When you first see wp you are confronted with a bunch of themes that look similar and are very simple. However, it's important to understand that wordpress is a content management system, and you can make the front-end look just like your website as it is.

You need a wp developer who is also skilled at front-end customization.

1) You should be able to keep your existing framework and integrate WP, and integrate a blog.
2) 'Moving things around' can be done, but you need to have custom WP modules/plugins built.
3) Nothing should take 3-6 months. You are right, if you had a WP engine installed you could add these things on your own instantly.

If you are looking to add a blog and upload a showcase of your own projects or brands get in touch with me.

I can definitely help you with that and get it done quickly.

If you want something customized from the ground up then from what it seems, your choice was a standalone PHP site that you wanted. I think you should have stuck with Wordpress or even tried Joomla, for wordpress you could have someone create a plugin for you with the features that you want to move and edit things around, I know in Joomla this can be done with modules in wordpress plugins can also be adjust based on your design. I think long term you could have set up a nice site with wordpress, it also you to blog add pages, etc. extending your site the way you want it.

The Plug in would probably cost you but you already have it designed, I would talk to a coder to see what cost is for converting it to a plug in and moving the design to a wordpress theme.

*Even with wordpress your going to have to pay someone to update the theme when theres updates to the wordpress software itself, This will also include needed updates to the plugin itself.

So i'm guessing there is no backend? designed for your PHP script, i'm wondering how you manage it.

im rambling,

1. I would convert to a plug in and move it in wordpress, you can customize your site further as it grows, plus you can also have a backend for the plugin i.e. features you can adjust, you can always take advantage of widgets within wordpress.

2. wordpress best option, you can tailor the site they want you need/want.

3. wordpress, create your own pages/sections, plus there are other plugins you can use that are free. 3-6 isn't long, you just have to ask the domainers if the site appeals to them.

No i don't think your being too impatient but make sure you grow your user base while consider any profit you can make, selling special features, site ads, etc. and dont forget to promote your own site.

I dont believe your wasting your time but there are a lot of competing sites take that into consideration.

I believe your site has potential, you have a good domain, I would sell my own domains on that site if I was running. If I had the money I would buy the whole site off of you and fold it into a section for my site keeping the original design, even though my site isn't a pure domain selling site. :)

I had a lot more to say but i wanted to kind of keep it short, hope it helps.

@webengine Thanks for the detailed feedback and suggestions!

I have tried wordpress before by myself but i felt it wasn't being taken serious enough. So I said, let me try something different, a script. Maybe, If I paid someone at the time to do a custom wordpress..then maybe that could have worked, maybe...

This site does have a back-end to manage my domains. It is capable of parking domains and having auctions. I realized that the name I'm using is strong enough to serve for more than just selling domains. It is really an umbrella for everything I'm doing on the web. I want to also showcase projects I'm working on/sites I'm developing. I would like an area for a blog. So when people come to my site I don't want it to be just another guy selling domains. I want to showoff my own online businesses etc..

Basically, I bought the name gotbrands instead of domainkeyword because I wanted something that can grow with whatever I'm doing. Now I am growing/evolving and the site doesn't allow me to do that easily. But someone said I could use subdomains and buy a blogging script and other plugins/widgets and add to the site. So I guess there is hope.

I'm going stick it out some more...and see what is really possible.
I would learn coding myself but I got so much going on right now.

when you said you weren't being taking serious, first thing I thought was find a different coder, if that was the issue because you have a good idea, but again there's is a lot of competition in that field.

It's good that it has a backend I was worried that you only had a script that did what it was designed for with no way to control the over functionality.

an umbrella for everything you doing? You can PM me the info, I would like to take a look. :xf.smile: So you are developing other sites? I thought it was your only project. I have some advice but i'll wait till you elaborate.

A blog is a great idea blog.gotbrands your dot com, you could just add a wordpress in that section its a free blogging script no need to pay for one, I still think you should take the whole site and have it designed around wordpress, backend would be simplified, you know creating sections, posts, and future features but that just my opinion.
