Hi,

I just got a message from GoDaddy saying someone is interested in a domain that I own. They are asking me if I'm open to negotiations. Before answering I would like to get some feedback on what would be a good price for "TheCreativeSchool(DOT)com".

Any ideas what a good appraisal might be.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I would say $0, seeing as how it is 3 words and adds 'the' for no reason. Especially seeing as how similar alternatives, such as 'OurCreativeSchool.com' are available to hand register for $10.

Thats a good name. Depends what your costs were, what you paid for it etc...What do you think it is worth?

Given that the OP is being approached by a buyer, I'm not sure a $0 valuation makes sense here... In addition, some other extensions are already registered in this name (.org, .in), showing a bit more value.

This kind of name typically sells in the low $XXX range in the aftermarket, but to the right end user you could fetch more.

Ideally, you want to find out all you can about them. Do some research. Have you googled their name... company...? Figured out location? The more info you have, the better prepared you'll be to negotiate.

But assuming we know nothing about the buyer:
  • If you're just looking for a quick sale, and aren't particularly attached to the name, I would ask $500 and be prepared to be talked down to half that.
  • If you're not in a hurry, and like the name a lot more than that, ask for something much higher. Just be prepared for them to walk away.

Thanks Pierre, I registered it over 10 years ago. I have done some research on it. There's an expensive book that uses the exact match name. Plus a couple of exact match using different extensions. Re: what I think it's worth... that's sort of why I was reaching out here. The interested party came from Godaddy so I know nothing about them. Thanks again.

Yes, given they are approaching me I'm wanting to price it for the end user. Re: Google them… I don't know anything about them as the inquiry came via GoDaddy. But yes, I'll go high and run the risk of them walking.

I could create a small eCom/Shopify site with top selling product (selling creative school products)… run some FB ads and get some $$$… as proof of concept and sell at 3 time potential yearly earnings… or that's my thinking at the moment. Big thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

Sounds good. i personally would go $799, possibly just because I like that number and I had a buyer 2 weeks ago for a two word .io domain at $799. But thats just me :)

Thanks for feedback Martin. I'm of a similar mind in that I don't think having "The" as prefix takes anything from the name. For example:

CreativeSchool(dot)com
TheCreativeSchool(dot)com

In fact having it prefixed with "The" sort of sounds like the better choice... though I'm somewhat biased :)

Typically adding "the" to almost any name will decrease the value, but as always... it all depends on what the buyer is willing to pay.

Yes, I suppose it was worth $10 a year to you. Like someone above mentioned, the only person that would really value this would be someone who owns the domain in another extension. Because if I was just starting out, I would just register a similar alternative for $10.
But it's interesting that you mention the 'offer came through GoDaddy'...do you mean it came through their 'domain buy service'? If so, that's a pretty good indication that whoever wants it doesn't know much about domain names.
