Complete newbie question but.... I have a domain that had a ton of subdomains associated with it. Each of those subdomains has its own backlinks. Basically it was a small hosting site and hosted pages using subdomains. For example jack.examplesite.com.

Is there a way to get the traffic that may be associated with those subdomains? If I park the main domain can I get the traffic from the subdomains or is it lost to the wind?

Thanks for the the help :)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
afaik, all parking services redirect traffic via a wildcard to the main domain... so you should not lose any traffic towards your domain.

You should ask the parking company you plan to park with to be sure though

Alternatively, you can add this domain to your existing hosting account (if you have one) then point all *.sitename.com to the main site while main site is parked.

Thank you, I have a site with Hostgator and 2 with Godaddy, I'll have to try and figure out how to do that.

To really max it out, I'd rebuild as much of the original structure and site (and make it better and more actual).

Then you might have really good chances to preserve ranking, traffic and backlinks (heck you may get new backlinks all along..)

A simple way to restore is a archive.org dump and dns, redirect, htaccess hacking..

I'll try parking first. It is working with the subdomains. I want to get an idea of traffic before I try and build them out.
I'd like to learn more about archive.org dumps though. I've always wondered how folks rebuild an old site.

Makes sense!

Go fast and easy.. if you have some bites, test & scale!

Thanks. I figured out how to download the old site from Archive.org. Reconstructing it will take some time. I'll see what I can do :)

Why not rebuild on your own instead of using the old site?

Just in case someone wonders about that same thing:

By rebuilding that old site you have higher chance of preserving backlinks, rankings and trust.

(as an added bonus, it´s often easier to update, amend and improve existing content than to do it from total scratch)

Of course it all depends on your goals and allowed time for that project.
