The ability to ignore threads would be really helpful.

Everything from over-priced sales threads and auctions that people keep bumping, to threads that amount to not much more than personal attacks on other folks... It would just be great to ignore threads we consider junky that keep getting bumped over and over. :)

Thanks!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Ignoring a thread would prevent it from appearing under New Posts, sidebar widgets (New Replies, Popular This Week), etc.

If you're interested in this, please Like the first post or leave a comment.

Thanks.

Yes! Would be great and very useful.

There are many threads with endless bumps and no new info, or just domains/discussions that I'm simply not interested in ever seeing, so this would save quite a bit of time while viewing the new posts.

great tip!
believe it or not I just wrote to Eric about this 2 days ago!

it would be amazing to not have threads we have no interest in, not getting into our field of vision on that right hand side of screen. it is nothing but a waste of time to scan same stuff over and over every time there is new activity in it, for things which we have exactly zero interest in reading.

amazing idea! thanks!

I just liked every post in this thread to register my enthusiasm for this idea!

I also just used "Element Hiding Helper" with AdBlockPro to remove the entire sidebar, chat refresh is distracting also.

Well, say you like this ability to hide threads.
Now you open up a sales thread and bam!
No one likes it so they have it hid.
You are selling to nobody, bumping for nobody, enjoying your nobody.
Just something to cogitate on.

As Eric said :: Ignoring a thread would prevent it from appearing under New Posts, sidebar widgets (New Replies, Popular This Week), etc.

I don't think "Ignore Thread" is a Good Idea , reasons behind this opinion

As we all know there are many members who just believe in short/keyword domains. And there are many who are going with Chinese Trend (Chips and Numbers). So lets Say Chinese go with new trend and start buying domains in particular extension but the members who don't believe in Chinese trend..ignores the thread which may results in appearing this thread in sidebar widgets (New Replies, Popular This Week) etc.. Eventually the members that want to follow it never see what's hot in market and fall behind and loose a share what may resulted in there opportunity to invest early and cash at right time.

I am little annoyed too with daily bumps on threads which I don't like an have to check numerous pages to see new posts.. But For that I have a suggestion that we should have Sorting Feature.

Sorting feature is currently active in Domains Names Wanted Section where you can sort the thread on the basis of New Requests or Recent Posts.

If similar functionality is enable all over the buy sell section or discussion section or on entire forum then I think it will solve every ones issue.

No one would force you to use it. But it's not for you to say who should be forced to see threads.

Not only save time, but make the new posts, side bars, etc, all show things we care about, which makes it a great idea.

Very good point, and I agree with you on one side. However, consider: what is the point of someone viewing your thread which they do not wish to view? They would surely not post, discuss, or bid anyway?

With it hidden, they can go about their business in their preferred threads, and the hidden thread would only receive attention from those actually interested in it.

Just because a thread starts out uninteresting or disliked doesn't mean it might not have become better or at least provide insightful info etc. This is the biggest issue I see.

As such, I suggest an option where we can tick a form box (on/off at will) which will show all threads regardless of ignored, and turn back on to only show threads not ignored.

I see scenarios where we might want to browse anything and everything, out of interest, or in case we missed something good. For example, a thread we previously ignored is in the "hot this week" side bar because since we ignored it there have been numerous posts. We wouldn't know the thread has turned interesting/popular so turning on "show all threads regardless" would let us see such things.

Update: The ability to ignore specific threads and specific forums has been added to our development roadmap.

It's a lower priority item, so no estimate on when it will be available, but we will have it one day. :)

@Eric Lyon - Any updates regarding this feature?

The NamePros slogan is “Buy, Sell, Discuss Domain Names”.

However, there seems to be no end to toxic threads discussing “controversial” topics related to religion, politics, history, ethics, etc. These subjects are highly polarizing, and this dichotomy inevitably brings out the worst in many of the participants.

I have no interest in all these discussions about the existence of god vs atheism, the ethics of eating animals, pro- vs anti-americanism, and whatever else is being discussed that has nothing to do with domain names. I assume that some of the threads that are going to be the most popular in the coming months are going to be about abortion, capital punishment, global warming, and other “controversial” subjects.

This is a domain name forum, and I am here to read about domain names. Of course I just try to ignore all these off-topic discussions, but since all of these nonsense threads constantly keep popping up under new posts, most popular threads, in the side bar widgets, it creates an endless clutter of non-domain related arguing, which really dilutes NP as a domain name forum.

Personally I’d rather have NP be almost solely a domain-centric discussion board, so it would be great if the feature of ignoring threads, or even certain sections of the forum, could be added soon.

I would be delighted beyond all words to see this feature added.
what is the purpose of glancing over thread titles each hour or day that we've already decided 100 times before we have zero interest in.

Excellent points. I've bumped up the priority on this.

I'll also adjust the Popular This Week widget and a few others to show domain-related topics only. That should take effect later today.

Thank you for helping us improve the user experience. :)

We heard you, and we've been working on it for a while now, but some more urgent issues have been distracting us. It's back on today's to-do list, though.

Let's make namepros great again!

To bad @Michael Ehrhardt is not here, i mean able to question that statement.

Will this feature be implemented anytime soon?

To add to my comment above, the decision to remove threads not related to domain names from some of the sidebar widgets has certainly helped prevent all of the "controversial topic" threads from gaining traction, so they no longer dominate the forum like they did at the time of my above post. That's a great improvement.

However, there is still a ton of nonsense to wade through most of the time, and it can be really frustrating trying to find anything of value in terms of domain investing discussion/advice these days. Certain members seem to have mouth diarrhea, often posting multiple times on nearly every page of discussion threads, and frequently making multiple consecutive posts (all lacking any kind of substance). That kind of posting can pass on a platform like Twitter, but when you have several people doing it on a forum like NP, it just hijacks and ruins threads, and so many new threads are just derailed right off the bat these days.

Many of these people have been called out on what they are doing by other members, but moderators have responded that it is not a problem. I've also tried reporting such posts, but was told the same thing. Since that is the case, it would be great to have the ability to just put all such threads on ignore.

(And while it is a domain related topic, I know that I'm not alone in being fed-up with the endless .COM vs .WHATEVER threads/wars, and it would be nice to have the option to put them on ignore).

I think its an awesome feature to have, as mentioned by @Tushar Batra there could be some drawbacks but there would also be advantages. Whats important is the option to choose...in my opinion the more choices we have then the more we can customize our NP experience.

We have features to help find the best threads quickly. Here are a couple:
  • Overview of the top content each day, week, and month (30 days).
  • Domain Discussion combines all of the discussion forums around domains into a single aggregate. This is almost identical to "New Posts" except that it only contains domain discussions (no sales listings).

Certain members seem to have mouth diarrhea, often posting multiple times on nearly every page of discussion threads
If their posts are relevant then multiple posts by the same member in many threads is not a problem.

Certain members seem to have mouth diarrhea, ... frequently making multiple consecutive posts (all lacking any kind of substance).
Both of these are a problem and they are rule violations:
  • "frequently making multiple consecutive posts"
  • "lacking any kind of substance"
Please report them. Here is the rule:

Rule 1.14. Do not make noncontributory posts or artificially inflate your post count ("post pad"):
  • Do not unnecessarily post multiple times in a single discussion in a short period of time, sometimes called instant messaging (instead, take your time before posting so that all relevant content can be grouped together within a minimum amount of posts).
  • Only post comments and questions that are pertinent to the topic and contribute to the discussion.
  • Needlessly short and/or noncontributory posts are not allowed except in select sections like Domain Name Requests and Domain Chat.
Many of these people have been called out on what they are doing by other members, but moderators have responded that it is not a problem.
I've also tried reporting such posts, but was told the same thing.
If Rule 1.14 is being violated and there are moderators saying it is not a problem, then please report that to NamePros Management. The management team will make sure that moderators are taking the appropriate actions and that those reports don't get handled incorrectly again.

Thanks for helping us fix this problem.

As a developer myself I say an easier solution for the sidebar would be to use a little JavaScript to make the sidebar boxes into collapsible boxes.

This way if you did not want to see a box the contents could be hidden or exposed with just one click.

This is extremely easy to implement and would not require messing with the site too much.

fantastic.. I am sure many members look forward to seeing you getting time to implement an ignore thread feature one day.
thanks

Is there a shortcut way to reach this? Like "New Posts" is right there in the header so it's easy.

I tried https://www.namepros.com/content-overview/ then the discussion tab , but that is different results than https://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/

EDT: Ok nevermind, it would still be nice as a forum feature but I just changed my keyboard shortcut so it defaults to above discussion link instead : duh - grin :
