When will banks recognize and understand the monetary value of digital equity and be willing to lend against domain names?

How long do we have to wait before we can walk in to a bank and say i would like to deposit this domain name? or? How long before we can say i would like to pay off my mortgage with this domain name?

I think we are very very far from getting to that stage.... would be awesome if we could one day do that. :)

It will never happen due to the subjective fluid value.

if we wait for mainstream banks to get round to it we'll be waiting for a few centuries yet - but j don't think well have to wait that long

There is not enough liquidity in the market. The market is tiny to begin with. Few names will ever sell.

good point because although the market may be tiny vast sums are being spent on new gtlds by registrars - ok so only a few domains will ever be sold from the vast amount of domain names that are available to be bought? any idea of the percentage that will or won't be sold?

Yes although wouldn't reccomend them

A domain i hand legged wasn't deemed valuable - funny how one of the biggest legal firms in the world now uses it?

Like what @Kate said. I'd venture to say the domain market gross is well under $1B annually. Unimaginable money to you and me, but chicken feed to banks and fund managers.

Next, take BrandBucket. Annually, they sell under 3% of their portfolio of some 40,000 names. Generously assuming average gross of $2K per domain sold, spread over their portfolio, that averages out to $55 per domain. Which value would you like to use as a valuation basis? ;)
