Intel Project Alloy - A Must Read
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3108...first-open-source-third-party-vr-headset.html

The pace of change with new VR product designs is about to increase exponentially.
And while this is one thing to move that along, it's not the only thing.

MR domains (mixed reality) and now is Intel pushing for merged reality... shorten it and again MR. I ques even more potential end users for MR domains...

'Merged Reality' - I haven;t come across that before. I guess there will be 100+ 'MergedReality' names regged from forum members here in the next hour.

I know moderators and certain individuals don't like us to discuss the comparative value of vr and other names here, but as far as Holo vs VR is concerned, the fact that there's a chance that many or most VR headsets could end up being powered by Windows Holographic is surely a factor to consider.

Great Points.
Regarding Intel and ALLOY... Intel has a few more tricks up it's sleeve with more supplemental hardware that I can't tell for sure it's true purpose, but I see a lot of potential.
You must watch the patents to see this stuff.

Windows Holographic is all about merging the VR and AR platforms. It is a open platform and likely to allow for a user in one format to interact with someone in another.

HOLO is neither VR nor AR nor MR SPECIFIC.
I know some wish that it were not so but you can view a hologram in any format.
(a hologram is something that appears 3 dimensional and does not 'actually' take up physical space)

I said a long time ago and with many privately that their will be many formats with some technical differences and while important to the purists, means nothing to the average consumer.
Any company that wants to separate itself from the pack will call it something else.
Some are going to have to get use to that fact, but in domains, it is what the consumer calls it that will make or break your keyword investments. No matter your preference, keep that in mind.
That is what guides me. But anyone is free to be guided by anything else they want.
A hand held monopole does not make a great domain but we call it a selfie stick.
Only one of those is technically true but the other is where the money is in online sales.
Be ready for any of the keywords to change as this evolves. "VR" isn't going away anytime soon even with the branding of some new stuff.

I am quite certain that we will hear a few more names for somethings that are slightly different.
It's all VR to the consumer till someone 'actually' breaks that mold IMHO.
But gee...
a new player with open platforms will make some rather quick changes to things don't you think.
Facebook and Oculus better get a move on as the industry will leave them behind quickly !
Exciting time to watch this come together.

For the same reason that Oculus VR got a trademark on the same while others had a trademark on the term OCULUS before them.
To understand that, you will have to learn it.

"it is what the consumer calls it that will make or break your keyword investments"

But it is the end user / company who will market his service / product (buyer of domain). Windows (Holo)graphic will be kind of a Android platform? I have read many interviews with the SEO from Microsoft calling the (Holo)Lens a AR or in other intervieuws a MR device.

The term Holo is an actual abbreviated noun for the word hologram and was around long before Microsoft decided to brand themselves with the term & any trademark.

holo
ˈhɒləʊ/

noun
informal
  1. a hologram.
Holo lens is really mixed reality.

But as a brand Holo as with VR & MR will have a bright future IMHO.

People have long known what virtual reality was even before the tech is where it is today. The same applies to the history of the term hologram, which is almost an household known entity, even though the tech isn't actually really here yet!

I appreciate your info and i agree with most.

But i have a hard time believing a trademarked word HOLO is attractive for a end user. (difficult to sell)

I think you missed the point.
What creates the KEYWORD demand for "generics" is mostly user search. Not what is technically true.

Windows Holographic is a subset open standard to win10. A universal interface allowing many platforms to interact/collaborate. VR AR MR even if mobile. They still have a lot of work to do but nice to know it's going to be there to make more things possible.

No. The word holo has not been trademarked. The 'figurative symbol' (i.e. a particular graphical image of the capital letters 'HOLO') has been trademarked.

A cross software platform like Android. I had this already in my previous posting.

So how do you use something that is not a Android device with it ?
I have not seen any plans for such. Perhaps the Daydream platform in the future.
AndroidVR and Daydream are not the same thing. One is a OS standard and the other is the interaction platform.
But it remains to be seen if you can use a Rift or Hololens with it.

Did you visited my link? A word trademark on HOLO. If it was only a figurative symbol it had less legal power.

https://euipo.europa.eu/eSearch/#details/trademarks/012049292

I am not trying to be a difficult. I just like to understand and share different views.

Yes I did visited your link. Did you visited my link? You can't trademark a word like Holo that is already in widespread use as a shortened version of Holographic. Why don't you get on the phone to Microsoft now if you think the word Holo has been trademarked? It was registered in 2014. Do you not think it would have caught the attention of Microsoft by now?

For a end user to buy a holo domain used by Microsoft for a headset and a software platform...

The thing is with a generic word like holo aka hologram / holographic(s) it would be pretty tough to win a TM dispute unless the plaintiff can prove a company is using their logo or product in bad faith. When talking VR/MR/AR/Holo the majority of names will be used for software. Which is in itself a beast of it's own regarding intellectual rights.

Still i see VR/AR/MR more usable for a end user. Time will tell but i am not interested in holo domains because of the word trademark and Microsoft combination (Microsoft and UDRP WIPO cases) I would not touch it but everyone is free to invest and sometimes taking some risk can be rewarding.

If you stand by your theory then you can't use any of them because there is some form of TM for all of them.

Yes. But some companies are active / aggresive with defending trademarks and some not. Microsoft is aggresive and when a end user is searching for holo and they see a active word trademark from a product and service provided by Microsoft there is a good change they will not go for holo in their name. But this is a forum and we have not all to agree.

This is my last posting with my opinium about this subject.
