In the ultimate sign of online vanity, the billionaire chair of Hong Kong telecoms company PCCW, Richard Li, has bought his own internet address: .richardli. for $250,000

While most are willing to settle for their name under a dot-com (he also owns richardli.com) Mr Li has used the opening up of the internet's namespace to register himself as a top-level domain, and this week it was officially added to the internet's global address book.

On the plus side, Mr Li will now be able to create hundreds or even millions of domain names featuring his name and potentially host a website on each: home.richardli, or work.richardli.

I think this might kinda open up the door way for loads of annoying dumb@ss celebrities trying to get their very own TLD's. It could lead to a rather messy buffet of URL's.

It had to happen. Some people pay a lot for vanity phone numbers or license plates. Why not for domain names ? But it's not a very productive buy anyway.

$250,000 for personalized extension; this is chicken pay for Mr.Richard Li. That's one of his advantage, second advantage is that other Richard Li would not be able to used this name as their extension. Therefore, monopolized Richard Li name has promoted a negative impact to the whole world.

If you want to have personalized name extension; it should cost you at least a minimum of $1billion. My just.thought

Perhaps someone should have told him that he can do the same by creating unlimited subdomains keyword.richardli.com for free without having to run a registry and needing staff !!!

I think you can do that for $3/month with Hostgator.

In future it will cost much less than $250,000 I think.

If this were to happen the market would be flooded with an unlimited number of possible names and everyone in the domain biz would be hurt including the nGTLD guys.

I don't think individuals are allowed to personalized the dot pizza, bar, casino, live etc. as these names are dictionary and encyclopedia words?

Choices of brand, products and pricing; will stay competitive in the market; as will as domain business...

Most manufacturers in China they have strick rules; employees are treated like a robots. Pay raise does not exist; if you don't own the business, the rest is history.
