When you sell x.com and you obviously contact owners of x.net and x.org, how do you convince them .com is much better? Because not everyone of them know that. Okay .com is more solid and reputable and trustable and legit - but these are just emotions, and what about numbers? Some research data, being psychological, marketing, financial, whatever data?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Dotcom domains (only meaningful, short, and that make sense) are:
  • More liquid
  • Most sought after
  • End-users like them
  • Business exposure (All businesses want dotcoms)
  • Globally recognized
  • Reg/renewal fees are very reasonable and affordable (Less than $9)
  • Great investment (Also for residual income)
  • List goes on and on... :)

Two words:

Perception
Presence

With a dot com your brand presence is unmatched and the perception of your brand increases in strength, authority and trust.

Do not confuse "presence" with web presence \ ranking, in which I am not relating to. Brand presence is how your brand connects to your audience in multiple ways, and having a .com domain name is one of the most powerful connectors you can have.

More intuitive.
If you are a business, consumers expect to find you on your <corporate name> + .com
Settled on .net/.org = latecomer
If you buy the .com (or anything else), then your competition can't have it.

Some of these might have been mentioned above as well.

Credibility
Owning a quality .COM that is relevant to your business can have a powerful impact.

Familiarity

With .COM there is really no need to explain anything. It is the globally recognized extension.

Supply & Demand
They can create endless new extensions. That does not change the fact there is only (1) .COM.

Memorable
With a quality .COM a brand can be built instantly. If your domain name is easy to remember then the chances of visitors coming to your site increases dramatically.

Targeted Traffic
This is especially true for keyword domains.

Investment
Premium .COM tend to retain and grow in value over time.

Block Competition
Better you own it than the competition.

On my response email email to the owner of the non .com, I usually telll some of the things posted above and also add:

"If someone tells you to visit a Website, for ex.,
ComputerDeals, without giving you the extension, you tend to assume it is the.COM."

Wow thank you guys for your brilliant inputs.

But anyway, have someone stumbled upon some researches that give some numbers or percents to these nice "recognition" and "credibility" and "memorability" words? I bet there should be such researches somewhere there...
