I know I haven't worded it clearly, so here is an example: Supposing there is a gTLD .jacks, then...
would:
jumping.jacks then be more valuable than jumpingjacks.com ?

Personally, I think the momentum on gtlds will mean an inevitable eating in of the .COM value. The question is when and the extent to which.

I think the when will be 1-3 years. The extent to which is a grey area for me.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to to this thread. A huge thank you to @aramyus for putting together the many statistics of recent sales relevant to this question and the commentary that this is typically less for the gTLD version than the .com. These stats and commentary helps give me a little more of a feel for the current market.

I also take the cautionary note pointed out by @finder17 @domain invest3r and @aramyus that things may change and it's hard to predict either way what to expect within the next few years in this area.

@salm81 thank you so much for your input on the example I had asked about, it's always helpful to me to get opinions on specific cases.

There are very few sales reported in namebio on gtld

Today's market price for gtld seems to be considerably lower than the .com homolog. There are a few exceptions for very short domains, or particularly attractive keyword combinations (eg: toys.club)

It may change in the future, but I'd advise much caution

Just an awesome list of sales and these are exactly the type of new GTLDs I thought would sale. I believe both JumpingJacks.com and Jumping.Jacks are valuable but at this point in time the .com has the power. I bet if someone had jumping.jacks and marketed people would still be confused and go to the .com version instead. In years to come this may change for some GTLDs.

Thanks @Willox Perez for adding to this thread. I had originally leaned toward the gTLD version being more valuable, but from what you and @salm81 are saying, the .com has maybe more power right now since like you said Willox, people might be confused and go to the .com

In between starting this thread and now, I happened to read the following article on Elliot Silver's DomainInvesting site. The article led me to understand more fully the factors behind the power of the .com relative to new gTLD's even if the new gTLD 'sounds' more elegant initially.

Indeed, I had a new gTLD domain which after reading the article I was fortunate enough to be able to acquire the corresponding .com cheaply. At this point after thinking over the topic, I feel that the ideal is having both of the domains (e.g. jumping. jacks and jumpingjacks .com ) in one's portfolio. This has made me a little more cautious about my approach to the new TLD's.
