Little help getting started

greetings, hey i am annie and i recently started with domaining, i just joined this forum but i am having some difficulty understanding how this industry works, i have been searching a lot regarding domain tips and short guides but i am still being confused, everywhere i am being told that a domain should be short, brand-able etc. So i have been told again and again to stick with tlds like .com and .net which i believe is right for now, so the problem is that "how do i know what is the worth of a domain?", i mean i tried using estibot and all but i don't really find them reliable, i am trying to read and understand the price at which domains are being sold but still i can't understand how?

Annie, do you want to know the worth of a domain before you purchased it? How is that possible? Try this. Post one of your domains for sale at NP for $20. See if anyone is willing to buy it. That will be a good start.

It's an interesting idea, but how do you do that without buying the domain ?

Also, NP has only domainers, and the offer they will make is only a small fraction of the end-user market price.

Annie, for months, I've been trying to get answer to your question. Unfortunately, I did not find any rational process to valuate a domain before buying it.

Below are a few tips that I gathered and might help you to start:

a) namebio.com publishes many past domain transactions. You can try to relate your domain with former transactions and have an idea of its value.

A warning however: if your domain is composed of two unrelated 'fragments' (~keywords), it may not be worth anything even if each fragment has a high value. For example, HDName.com and a few other places publish daily a list of such available domains. Nobody seems to be buy them, which for me is a sign they have not much value (of course there are exceptions, but I was not able to detect them)

b) Similarly, check the completed sales section on NP: people report the domains they sold, and sometimes they give hints on how they sold it and why they purchased it.

c) Keep looking at domains that you feel are valuable AND are well visible. If within a few months someone buys one of them for real, it means it had value, else, it probably did not have much. This process can help you learn if a domain is valuable or not.

For example, I created a utility to check which BB domains were sold after a few months. That's an indication on what sells or not.

This method does not apply if the domain is not 'highly' visible:
There are probably thousands of people checking domains for sale or available to register every day. Despite this intense activity, there are still a few gems that are not visible enough to be sold.


d) Before buying a domain, ask yourself who is going to buy it. For example, who advertises on adwords for related subjects, which company in related field might be interesed, is it a speculative subject such as vr or drones...


e) Keep in mind the statistics about selling domains: Many domainers have a portfolio of tens or sometimes thousands of domains, and many of them won't be sold. On NP, you have regularly sales at distressed prices from domainers who want to clean their portfolio.

On general tip on domaining is to manage your portfolio so as to have a positive cash flow at all time. So, after you've spent your initial investment, make sure you have sold a few domains before investing again. If you are not experienced, it's better start with a modest investment and buy domains that you can sell quickly, even with a low profit.

You simply can't. If it's not legaly yours, there would be a problem selling it. I would take the risk of buying the domain only after a thorough investigation.

You can't. Do your homework, then try and buy a domain. if it sells great, if not try again. You will likely have a lot of failures, but the few successes will be large enough to cover them. Nobody has 100% success and everyone has bought domains that don't sell and never will.

I'm also a new beginner. I would recommend you to follow the discussions in the forum. There are always new tips and reccomandations for the trends and values.
