GoDaddy Auctions -- Discussion, Acquisitions, and Sales

I searched the forum and could not find a thread dedicated solely to Godaddy auctions, which seem to be heating up lately.

I envision this thread as a place for discussion regarding YOUR sales and acquisitions, and general discussion about the auction venue itself, and, perhaps, some domain oddities that are popping up on the auction site, for example, high-priced domains that should be regfee.

:)

One caveat, though: for your own good, PLEASE do not reveal your auction win (or anyone else's, for that matter) until the domain has landed in your account because the original owner still has the option to renew it, and I know how vexing that can be. In other words, don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

On the other hand, if you're having second thoughts about your auction win, by all means tell us all about it.

I suppose that if an auction win is high profile, it's already out there, but, still...

Anyway, I'll start with three comments:

1. I won my first (and maybe last) intentional typo, and it's getting clicks (no $ so far, though): Forwx.com. I could not find a live TM on this term, but one never knows. I have mixed feelings about this one.

2. I accidentally clicked on a BIN that I didn't want (I wanted the one above it), but I decided to honor the bid anyway. Grrr..., so be careful before hitting the submit button. It's not in my account yet, so I can't really reveal it right now.

3. Currently, there's a weird .co domain at over $9,000, with three bidders duking it out. Again, I don't want to reveal what it is, but if you go to the most active auctions, it's number 1 (as of this posting).

Mods, I hope this thread is okay.

:)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
In theory the registrar could send the domain to redemption from day one past expiry, it doesn't have to offer a grace period at all.

Thank you, sdsinc.

Staying on the recent .us auction bandwagon, anyone here bid on any of the good expiring Dynadot auctions from today? Was suprised I got a one worder for a bit over minimum.

I didn't see any good ones today :)
I saw some average ones :-P

But before you think I'm just mean...

About 5 years ago I had an idea for a great site (imho) but I couldn't find a good name for it. I looked for about 3 years and forgot all about it.

Yesterday I saw a .US that was *perfect* for the site I had forgotten about so of course I picked it up.

So in the madness I picked up one. Probably less than good.. and average but goes with the .US and I *will* make good use of it! :sold:

*fingers crossed not renewed*

Just noticed you said Dynadot... lol.. I don't ever look there because I've bid 3 times and always renewed. Figure it's easy to put on a backorder if I really want it.

I grabbed a couple. I expect most of them to be renewed. That is what normally happens on Dynadot.

I am no .US expert.... But in my opinion the only real deal there was Wrestling.US

Slightly off topic.

Wrestling.ME is still without bid over at the Sedo.me auction. Might be worth a gander.

That hugg.me for $25,001 is interesting. Says coming soon on the site, wonder if it was huggme.com, that huggme pillow or something else.

I just got called from my Godaddy rep and those idiots are suspending my GD auctions account because they think I had contacted the previous owner and bought the names directly from them.

In my case, it isn't even true but they didn't care. I explained that I was a partial owner in the names to begin with and they refused and closed the account.

Partial owner before they expired ?

Even if you had what difference does it/would it make?

I don't have a problem with anyone contacting someone who has an expiring name. The original registrant may be more entitled to a holiday bonus than godaddy.

Interesting twist.

Godaddy needs to cut this crap out.

What do they expect? GD has set up an auction model which encourages loopholes and, consequently, nefarious backdoor behavior.

If they don't want former owners to transfer/sell expired names, then they need to lock those domains and place them in "hold" until a redemption fee is paid.

THIS IS ALLOWABLE UNDER THE ICANN AGREEMENT.

And once that fee is paid, then the owner is free to do whatever.

Going after auction members on "suspicions" is just plain bad business.

Not sure if they are allowed...but they could provide their domain customers with Free Privacy settings.

This would:
1) Be a huge selling tool for them
2) Act as a shield for their paranoia of losing a buck on what they consider backdoor sales
3) Also alleviate the garbage coming from spammers that grab whois email addresses - although I wouldn't have known about a great parking company if that were the case! :)
4) Save me some money on a couple domains I have paid privacy on.

Just a thought!

What do you mean exactly ? You were bidding on domains that you were a co-owner of ?
Maybe they thought shill bidding of some sort.

Shill bidding on an auction you don't profit from would be interesting - unless the name was renewed... ah, I gets it. :xf.love:

I see, but how would they know that?

Easy to figure out shill bidding activity. We may not know the identity of "Bidder 1," but Godaddy would.

GD could Simply match up names of bidder 1 and owner of expired domain.

Now if the owner had a friend do a shill bid, that might be problematic, which is why one should be careful when bidding on any domain auction.

The privacy idea would not work with .us because privacy isn't allowed.

Also, the savvier aftermarket buyer has all the tools he/she needs to check domain history.

The only way this sort of behavior can be curtailed is to start the aftermarket auctions later and create a domain lock that really works.

Godaddy needs to stop hiding behind ICANN rules that don't exist.

IMO .ME is a terrible investment. I understand that alot of hacks have sold successfuly. The extension just looks like every other cctld during landrush... great for initial purchase and immediate resell for profit.

I do not see the long term value at the moment.

Thank you for thinking of me though!

Might want to read the .me thread.

I have. Am I missing something?

If it .ME was still landrush, in retrospect I would have bought and flipped for profit immediately to other domainers.

I still do not believe the "actual" value is there yet.

Its value is strictly speculative, as a whole, the enitre world, aka endusers, are not clamoring to get their .ME domain.

At least not yet.

I will not label it as a buy until there is real demand by endusers.

Just my opinion.

The privacy idea would not work with .us because privacy isn't allowed.

Ironic, the .US is just like the U.S., no privacy allowed!! :)

Because it's been 4 years now since general availability and the prices are going up and so is the interest, not down. As far as end users, .com is still the best, always will be but a lot of startups have been using the extension. All that is in that long thread.
