The Official .ws thread

.WS can stand for WEBSITE.

It has pros and cons as a domain. This thread is for people who wish to suggest ideas to build up and help promote the .ws domain as well as to give and receive help and advice on .ws domains in general. Some useful info contributed through this thread below. Views and comments anyone...

http://website.ws/faq/index.dhtml

The registry is now allowing .WS domain names to be transferred from registrar to registrar. It seems that most registrars just haven't updated their websites to allow this yet.

This is good news for the .ws market as this was a major factor in holding .ws back. Time for .ws to take off? Can we publicize this to help boost the market?

So why buy .ws?
1. Excellent keywords can still be regged.
2. You can buy premium keywords for $20-$50.
3. Excellent development potential, luckily goog doesn’t really care about which extension the site is on but how much content s there and how often it is updated.
4. Godaddy markets .ws - little but its a big brand
5. The ‘website’ christening seems to have more and more acceptance.
6. Its easy to get traffic and thus revenue for better keywords in .ws than a ‘bad’ keyword in .com

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I have a few .ws; they are minimal to zero resale value. The keywords come in handy when developing, and in the extension there are some great available names due to the tendency of domainers to avoid .ws like the plague. But again, if your goal is to buy and resell, you're better off avoiding the tld.

Any extension with traffic has value.

Yea I would probably not register a .ws domain any time soon. I'm heavily invested in .com.

There is value in EVERY Domain extension...
except this one.

Sorry Bro, go buy a longtail .com with your $15.00 or cough up $5 more bucks and grab a good one word .TV, or go grab 5 .us's, or 15 .info's, or buy yourself a pizza w/your $15.00 but do yourself a favor, seriously stay away from this garbage.

Vito
It all depends. Web Directories List - 17,000 up-to-date free, paid, niche & regional directory listings. is quite successful and it has a hyphenated name.

Yeah, I knew you were around the corner...lol
I knew there was always the exception.

I usually dont take too harsh a stance against many extensions because there are always those exceptions, and I myself play with speculative niches and some off the wall extensions sometimes. But as I have played with and researched a bunch of cctld's I have never seen anything good come out of these .ws's same with a couple other extensions but I really think that If the OP is just buying to flip, then he is just throwing money out the window. IMHO.

Although, I have been wrong, I think once before...lol

ALMOST but nothing is impossible(just hire Tom Cruise!) lol

How about a buzz around the new .jeff extension, let's setup a fund where we collect 250k to give him his own extension and he can focus his opinion/ +/- around it....lolD-::p

My past football coach (Art Moore) and his wife Gail use a .ws (yesican.ws).

I have two myself:
Farmers - Farmers of Wind & Sun
Natalie - Reserved for my sister

Ok PaullyMac,

I was wrong.
Go buy a .ws cuz I really dont know what I'm talking about.

I'm gonna go hang my head in the corner now...
but first I have to reg Vito.ws, lol

lol, unfortunately the 250k would be required as ICAAN requires you to chip out some serious money if you want to have your own extension(and this number is not confirmed, it was an estimate lol)...but when it comes to a nay sayer i do that for 49k(hehehe i beat u with 1k) :)

Cheers

It's brilliant.

.com means words
.TV means video

.ws means Web Site.. this means words and video

This is almost as good as the highly brandable .web B-)

Buy only if u plan to develop it..
End users might not even realise that this extension.ws exist
very slim chance.. of course there is some exception here n there but to invest in this extension is like throwing money into the sea

I'll be blunt. I would never reg a .ws no matter what the keyword or even the price.

75% of the world is not online yet, the top level extensions are hard to get in single word if someone is looking but there are still plenty free if you search though a lot of crap is floating around.

When the rest of the world starts coming online I expect a lot of domains to start getting bought up as always happens but the com will always be king, ws just seems like one of those domains built to deal with overflow but built badly, like Old Kent Road compared to Mayfair.

I might be tempted to buy a few if the cost wasn't so high for what is in effect a junk domain...bring it down to $1 or so and maybe there will be more being sold.

As it is there are just too many domains for too few people so why should people waste their time?

I like the ws names I own.
If you like the name, buy it.
That's all I have to say about that! :ghost:

I read a short while ago that the extension most used by cybercriminals is .ws

Will try to find the article and post it.

We have a number of .ws parked and used to make some money with them and others like .cn and .in. But Yahoo decided that these ccTLDs MUST only be spam so they blocked them. So we are letting them go as the expire.

But they are find if you want to build a site and don't mind a TLD that most people don't know much about. For a site they can work as well as anything else in my experience with KevinHam.ws. :)

Not a fan myself of these extensions but it's late and I shouldn't be buying domains so I bought beagle and ledtv in the .ws. One with 1,000,000 exact and the other with 600,000. I'm always going to prefer the .com for obvious reasons.

But I will say this. As far as search engines, this extension is pretty much like every other extension in that quality sites built out on those extensions, can rank just fine. As an example:

Orange Beach, page 1 Google, a .ws site

Orange Beach - Google Search

a decent one.

You can find examples like that all day long. So as far as that goes, it's fine.
