I am doing some research on alternative extensions and .tv in regards to how many yearly registrations they have.

Seems that Verisign has been secretive about how many registrations the .tv top-leve domain has since they bough the dotTV company for $45 million in 2003 or so. The last published number in 2003 was 473,000.

Does anyone know today's number? I know Verisign said that .tv was in the top 25 of TLDs and ccTLDs. The number 25 position hovers around a million registrations.

Does anyone know the exact number and why is Verisign not making these public? I do not think it is in their Annual Report to investors/shareholders.

:hi:

I, too, don't understand ... why this information is not freely & readily available IMHO. :yell:

Good Luck,

The exact number would only be known to Verisign, they don't release the zone files which is how people would usually know. Maybe we will get a glimpse when the contract to run the registry is up for renewal in 2012.

They don't release it because they can. Its good to be the registry. The renewal is up in 2016 Snoop. IDEA LAB had the original contract for 12.5 years. When Verisign bought they got a contract in 2001 to run for 15 years.

By the way, Constantine ... I briefly mentioned your "Music.mobi" here in another .TV thread; folks can refer to the published story and related discussions there as they see fit, IMHO. :gl:

All the best,

Are you sure? 12 years claimed here from 2000,

"In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name ".tv" for $50 million in royalties over a 12-year period."

I am sure Snoop. Wikipedia is no expert when it comes to .tv. That's correct $50 million and 12 years that was the original DOT TV CORP. Verisign came in Dec 2001. They got the contract for 15 years.

Because 25% of the zone files were being blocked, in '97, the Internet Systems Consortium came up with a new way to count, in '98, and reports its findings twice a year, Jan. & July. The new Domain Survey "attempts to discover every host on the Internet by doing a complete search of the allocated address space and following links to domain names".

"those who block zone transfers of their domains in order to hide their host data have a false sense of security." ISC

The new Domain Survey numbers are the "minimum number" and the ISC states... "We cannot tell if there are hosts or domains we could not locate."

The Jan. 2010 Internet Domain Survey results are published online at: https://www.isc.org/solutions/survey

When I was looking for a domain for my new company in 2001 I couldn't purchase the .com because it was already taken. There weren't many options at the time. I was excited when I stumbled upon .tv by accident and have used it ever since. I liked the idea that a young start-up in California negotiated a deal with an island no one ever heard of and was pumping cash into their economy. It wasn't long though that the market for domains opened up and one could purchase .net, .us, . biz, and the like. I would like to see how many .tv's are still in use. I like mine - ECPM.tv. I am surprised that I don't see more of the .tv's in use though.
