I am working on a site for marketing houses and apartments that are available for holiday renting.

I have 2 domains, a short .info and a long .com, which one would you use as the main site, and why?

The names are:
Renting.info
HousesAndApartments.com

Cheers :)

Would go for the com every time. The info is so abused by proxies and spammers that there are very few decent sites.

To be on the safe side I would redirect renting dot info the com site also.

Renting.info

that's a great domain and .info's are on the way up. i heard how much hotel.info was making a while back -- i can't recall now but it was a lot!

agreed it might be a little early for the .info -- for the reasons mentioned above. a .com is a prudent bet if you want to make money straight away.

but if you were in for the long haul and didn't need an immediate return, i'd get started branding the .info now.

is it possible to get a closer .com and then shorten? or a highly searched keyword term, you can later redirect?

Between those two, I'd go with "HousesandApartments.com". I would try to find something short if at all possible though --- if you search a bit and are willing to compromise on the words house/apartment for some alternatives eg. housing, homes, etc you should be able to find something shorter + more memorable.

i would only use the .info for a main site if i also had the info.com for it. for example i would use Renting.info instead of a long .com if i also had RentingInfo.com to redirect to Renting.info.

When I saw the title of your thread, my kneejerk reaction was that you should use the .com. However, I think your .info is very strong. Renting.com is developed but it is not competing for your market specifically, they have a much broader focus, which I think is a good thing for you. Personally, in this particular case, I would develope the .info.

If you're marketing houses for rent, .info shouldn't even be on the table. :imho:

Why not? If you are in the business of providing information about renting houses, then renting.info seems like a good choice. I am not a fan of the .info at all, but the OP has probably one of the strongest .info names for the site he is looking to develop.

I agree -- it's a very nice .info. What I got out of the original post is that he's marketing/selling the houses. I personally don't associate buying/selling with .info. :imho:

I will take renting.info.

THe .com is just too long.

My gut reaction is the dot com. Most here recognize the strength of that info though. It's a dillema.

I guess it boils down to your focus.

Renting - It's from the owners perspective imho
Houses and Apartments - more broad and can speak to renters, owners, buyers and sellers

So based on my above...I would still go dot com here.

I want to agree because I am a big fan of going with the .com when you can. But in this case, if he is looking to really develop then renting.info is a stronger choice than housesandapartments.com. It is much more brandable imho. I would not spend one red cent trying to brand "housesandapartments.com" but I would give a real solid effort branding renting.info.

The OP is not marketing to buyers and sellers. His market is people that are looking to rent a house or apartment for a Holiday. Renting.info, is the best choice for that market between the two names.

I was also thinking about development of a similar site. And I know a few others who are doing same - seems to be a trend nowdays. I hope you are aware of the massive competition and the presence of established, well-recognised and popular giants in the field?

With regard to names I will be honest, I think none of the two is good. Nevertheless .com IMHO is always better for a commercial venture.

update - since commenting i often think of your "renting.info" - driving around, whatever i'm doing. it passes the stickability test - super easy to remember.

your .com i have no idea what it is. i'd have to find the thread to remember, and then i'd not care much to look at it anyway.

another tick for renting.info. (i think there will be thousands of businesses in the same position at the moment.)

I will pick renting.info for sure, since the .com version is too long. but will forwarding the .com to it

Thanks everybody for the comments so far :) The poll looks pretty close at the moment, with the .info slightly in the lead.

Personally, I would prefer .com, and I did search hard for other options.
My requirements: generic, global (non-geographical), and related to renting holiday houses and apartments.
If you know of something more suitable, please do PM me.

Yeah, the domain/website has to look good/trustworthy to potential customers looking into renting a holiday house/apartment through the website. As well as people looking to advertise their property on the website.

Yes, I am aware, I have been operating a small holiday accommodation marketing/management business in Sydney for almost a year, it has been going quite ok.

Thanks, that's funny :)

Yeah, I like renting.info too because it is easy to remember, and share over the phone, etc.
But, I also like HousesAndApartments.com because the .com has gives it a more solid feel, and the keywords are much better for search engines.

HousesAndApartments.com has two highly searched keywords, "renting" is not such a highly searched term as shown below:

If a newbie may dare to comment, I'd say that HousesAndApartments.com is preferable because it is much more targeted to your market.:imho:

Renting.info, while very nice, short and memorable, is a much broader term. It could refer to many other fields, unrelated to your business, such as car rentals, equipment hire etc. So the name would be less help in bringing the specific type of visitors you want to your site.

Just my 0.02p (oh, better make that cents given the currently plummeting £ )
