domains What GoDaddy Won't Tell You

Spaceship Spaceship
Go Daddy’s people are standing by via phone and Internet chat, but there’s a few things you aren't going to hear from GoDaddy’s finest.

WHO SAID DISCO(UNT) IS DEAD?

Okay, so the days of using 99 cent coupons to register HomemadeMiniPickles.com for your grandmother‘s secret recipe are over, but there are still coupons available and you should be taking advantage of them.
  • If you are a new account with a fresh credit card, you can get a single dot com for $2.99 (1st year price) when you register for 2 years or more by going here (select "Domain Deals"). Additional years at standard price.
  • After that, get as many dot com's as you can using the codes PHD3 and REV10 by paying only $8.49 apiece. They’ll work multiple times for multiple domains. This is a better deal than the Discount Domain Club price of $8.29 (not including the ICANN fee of $0.18) that requires a $120 annual fee.
  • There are some perks with the Discount Domain Club, like free Domain Auction membership, discounts on other TLD's, etc. If you decide to go for the DD Club purchase, use the coupon code DDCDS2015 and get 30% off (special thanks to Shane for the code).
  • Got the winning bid at a GoDaddy auction? Using coupon code CJCRMN35 will get you 35% off on the renewal fee at the time of checkout.
For more squeal-of-a-deal coupon codes, check out the amazing NamePros thread that’s dedicated solely to GoDaddy Coupons. The coupons may be affiliate codes, but they are not mine.

FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS BUY DRUNK

In the old days when I went to college, we got drunk and ran across the campus naked. But now? You youngin’s are celebrating your inebriation by buying domain names.

Yeah, domain names like DeepFriedPixels and PronShd (both in dot com of course). If you don’t believe me, just read this story at Yahoo News.

Should you become the unintended victim of a night of Internet debauchery, don’t worry. You can get a refund!
  • Many domain name registrations are fully refundable within 5 days of the time of purchase.
  • Monthly products can be refunded if cancelled within 48 hours.
  • Annual products can be refunded (prorated) if cancelled within 45 days of purchase.
  • Automatic one-year renewals may be cancelled within 45 days but manual renewals have a refund window of only 5 days.
GoDaddy is not so forgiving with auctions and other products, so check the refund policy and read the fine print carefully.

RESURRECTING THE DEAD

Did you forget to renew your favorite domain? No worries, you can rise like a Phoenix and live again! The domain can be yours a second time at no extra cost for up to 12 days 18 days after expiration. You can even grab it for several weeks after that by paying a $80 penalty or you can transfer it to another registrar at the receiving registrar's standard transfer-in price to avoid the $80 fee. See the GoDaddy help page for more details.

--

So if you’re hungover, got amnesia, or are just plain stupid and forgetful like me - don’t worry, GoDaddy’s got your back with an array of coupons, refunds, and second chances that are sure to keep your money-making, domain train, right on track.

Have you got a “domains I bought under the influence” story? Know any GoDaddy tips or tricks? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Another point would be that once the domains are in the "expired domains" section of the domain manager you can click the checkbox next to the domain and unlock the domain and get the authorization code. Instead of paying the $80 redemption fee you can simply transfer it to another registrar. I've done this dozens of times, then transfer the domain back to GD after 60 days and get another year added if you want all of your domains at one registrar.

Question: How does GD's Domain Discount Club membership works?

Like I have seen that it gives discounted prices to members. So example, if I purchase the member for one year, and renew my domains for let's say 5 years, then I wouldn't be needing the DDC membership next year to renew the same (or keep them active) domains; right? OR, does DDC only allows 1 year domain renewal option?

Correct.

Another way to get a renewal discount is to renew in bulk. You can renew for multiple years at the discounted price.

If you have more than 40-50 domains you should have DDC. I've had it for years and was irritated I didn't get it sooner. I believe renewals are 8.47 and transfers in are 7.99 for .coms. You can typically use one of the percentage off coupons when you first purchase it as well.

That's a good point if you're not adding to your portfolio. I typically buy dozens to hundreds of domains on GoDaddy auctions per month so I receive the discounted renewal rate that they tack on at checkout on those as well

You will likely not get further discount if you are a member of DDC. I tried it and the the response was ''PROMOTION HAS BEEN APPLIED TO YOUR CART!'' Has any member of the DDC succeeded at using the code or could it be that Godaddy has blocked members from taking such advantage?

This is not related to being a member of DDC. You can combine DDC with coupon codes, I've done it plenty of times in the past. The issue here is that Godaddy for a few months now has disabled almost every coupon code out there. Godaddy also linked similar priced coupons and made them a one-time use (for example if you used a $2.95 coupon code in the past then another $2.95 coupon code won't work anymore).

Of course if DDC gives you a higher discount compared to the coupon code only the DDC discount will be applied (they are not cumulative).

Now clearly explained. Thanks. GD clearly states that Domain names you purchase through your Discount Domain Club membership are not eligible for other promotions or discounts.

True, yes. I've used hundreds of the $1 codes and up in combination with DDC. One thing though, I believe you have to wait until the grace period (a week?) after DDC expires to use a percentage off code for the actual DDC membership.

Great info - I wasn't aware of the refund within 45 day policy. Very useful information. Muchos thanks!

FYI It turns out the 45 day thing doesn't apply to domain reg - in which case it's 120 hours - but does to a few other products. Bummer. :)

That's correct. The article says:
  • Many domain name registrations are fully refundable within 5 days of the time of purchase

Back in mid-October of 2015 I get...well, let's just say intoxicated, and regged b00bees.com.

I'll let you know in the morning if it was a wise move or not.

But I'm thinking that it was, because everyone loves b00bees. Even if b00bees don't make honey, like normal bees do.

It doesn't matter what you paid for the domain, you can transfer out after 60 days from the initial registration. The same applies to all registrars.

I am sure. All of us on this site do it all the time. Price has nothing to do with when and if you can transfer.

"or you can transfer it to another registrar at the receiving registrar's standard transfer-in price to avoid the $80 fee."

Can i transfer a domain name to another registrar when 20 days have passed after the expiration date?

Yes. You will have 42 days after expiry to transfer the domain out. However I don't wait that much to make the transfer to be on safe side :)

Godaddy.com support team refused to transfer my 2 domains which were expired 19 and 20 days ago respectively!
Any solution?

Have you unlocked the domains? (You can do it in Expired Domains section in your account)
Has the domain pushed to your account within past 60 days?
Have you changed any whois contact details of the domains within last 60 days?

Yes, they are unlocked.
No, the domains are there in my account and renewed since 2010
No, i didn't change any contact detail.
Yes, i called Godaddy support and i had chats with them but they insisted not to let me transfer the 2 domains out and that i must pay the redemption fee if i want not to lose the domains.
