sales Understanding the Mid Five-Figure Domain Name Sale of Huifenqi.com

Spaceship Spaceship
Renting a place in China requires a lot of cash upfront. Apart from the one-month deposit, renters also need to pay three to six months of rent in advance when signing a contract, which may be difficult for people with good income but not much saving.

Huifenqi is an app and lending service designed with this in mind. Simply described, Huifenqi makes the advance payment on your behalf and then you pay them back in monthly installments plus interest. It's gaining in popularity and received Series A funding within a year of its launch.

In May of this year, the startup paid mid five figures CNY to acquire the domain name Huifenqi.com for its official website. The name Huifenqi consists of three Pinyin characters (commonly called "3-pin" within the domain industry): Hui(会) Fen(εˆ†) Qi(期). The domain name matches its service brand and means "paying by installments."

What a simple message! You get it right away when you see it.

As a 3-pin containing only 9 letters, Huifenqi is quite easy to remember. However, to protect its brand and future, the company may want to acquire its acronym equivalent: HFQ.com. The domain name HFQ.com is currently displaying a parked page with ads and an inquiry link that indicates it may be for sale.

I find it curious they didn't register δΌšεˆ†ζœŸ.com. Even if it was simply to redirect traffic to the pinyin site.

I'm not sure if there will be any traffic. I'm not convinced the idea of half IDN half ASCII will ever work.

Neither am I. Nevertheless the really good 2-3 character Chinese words seem to have been taken in all major extensions.

Kassey, may I ask if there are any sites that are tracking 2-pin, 3-pin (etc) sales data?

PayByInstallments.com would get rather "mid five finger" than "mid five figure" in the west...

I don't know as I don't track domain sales.
