Top Topics: Will You Do Anything Differently in 2021?; A New Era in Domaining?...

By James Iles, Jan 3, 2021
  1. In the first Top Topics of 2021, we look at whether domain investors plan to do anything differently in the new year. Elsewhere, a domainer asks for advice on a five-figure negotiation, and what do you do after getting a cease and desist letter?

Also, an investor makes some predictions for the coming year, and someone warns the community not to repeat a mistake they made.

My First 5 Figure Negotiation. I Need Advice!

After acquiring a domain name in October for $2,300, this investor received an email from a GoDaddy broker with an offer for $5,000. The offer was promptly rejected with a $13,000 counteroffer.

Now, the seller is looking for advice from the community after receiving a revised offer of $7,500. What should the investor’s next step be? Without knowing the domain name, it’s difficult to offer advice, but what would you typically do in this situation?

Are You Looking to Do Anything Differently in 2021?

The new year is here, and it’s often an opportune time for investors to evaluate the previous year and plan for the next twelve months. With Christmas and the turn of the new year traditionally being a time where little happens in the business world, it’s usually the best period for reflection.

What are you looking to do differently in terms of domain investing in 2021? That’s the question being asked here. So far, it looks as though many investors are turning towards quality over quantity and trying out new strategies for sales landing pages.

I Got a Cease and Desist. What Do I Do?

In the weeks after registering a seemingly generic music-related domain name, this investor received a cease and desist letter from a large music company. The cease and desist letter asks the registrant to transfer this domain name to the company in question.

The investor has asked the community for opinions on what they should do. Should they hand the domain name over? Should they ask for some compensation in return for transferring the name? As you might expect, there are some differing opinions in this discussion.

    A New Era in Domaining?

As I mentioned earlier, the turn of the year is often a time for reflection. This discussion starts with an investor’s reflections on the year ahead after unexpectedly selling a domain name. The subject matter is based around the next few years in domaining.

The COVID-19 pandemic features heavily in the predictions from this domainer, realizing that the world is being driven online. These predictions and reflections are well written and certainly worth a read. What are your predictions for the future?

    Don't Make This Mistake

If you're not organized, it can be easy to make pricing mistakes with your portfolio. In this discussion, an investor is issuing a warning to other domainers after failing to ensure their pricing was consistent across all marketplaces.

In short, someone snapped up one of the investor's names through Afternic for a much lower price than their DAN listing. Perhaps now is an opportune time to review your pricing consistency across all domain marketplaces.
