Spaceship Spaceship
On Wednesday, we started a brand new Q&A series, in which we ask one question and get a number of experts to respond. Our first question was based around the idea of what type of domain names you should consider buying when you’re starting out.

We had nine experts on hand to provide some fascinating answers. We are planning on publishing this series every two weeks, so subscribe to the blog to ensure you don’t miss this series.

Here’s this week’s Top Topics.

How Do I Avoid Losing Traffic to a .COM?

There have been many famous examples of marketed ccTLDs or new gTLDs losing traffic their .COM alternatives. The first that comes to mind is Overstock’s disastrous move to O.CO in 2010. According to Overstock’s CEO, the company lost 61% of its traffic to O.COM - a domain that’s currently reserved by the registry.

In this discussion, one investor is looking to develop a site in a specific niche, but buying the exact match .COM is not feasible. The general consensus seems to be that buying a .COM is currently the only way to avoid traffic leaks, assuming the developed website receives a large amount of type-in traffic.

What Happened In My First Year of Domaining

The full article can be seen in this discussion, but some of the highlights include this investor selling brandable names on Flippa in no reserve auctions, selling a name for $1,000 and spending valuable hours in creating an unsuccessful brandable domain shop.
