How Much Is Your Portfolio Worth?

Recently, domain investor Rick Schwartz tweeted a rough guide to the valuation of his portfolio, eventually determining that he valued his entire portfolio of seven thousand names at over $500 million.

This news was the catalyst for a debate amongst domain investors as to how much their own domain portfolio is worth. It has also sparked quite the discussion about Rick’s portfolio and how he has valued each domain within his portfolio.

I Sold Kute.com for $20,000

Domainer @rentmynames announced the sale of Kute.com this week for $20,000. According to the seller, the buyer got “a great deal”, but they were in need of funds. Did this investor undersell Kute.com? Many other domainers are under the impression that the investor could have sold the name for much more, but having acquired the name for $7,000 in around 2011, it is still an excellent return on the original investment.

This domainer also announced the sale of tosu.com this week for $5,655. What are your thoughts on these sales?

How Do You Manage Your Domain Names?

If you have a substantial portfolio of domain names, how do you keep track of renewal dates, nameservers and other important details? Services such as Efty provide excellent online tools to keep track of your portfolio, but some investors prefer offline options.

Excel spreadsheets, custom databases and even notepads seem to be popular options amongst domainers. How do you manage your own portfolio?

In this fun conversation, domainers are discussing the moment when you realise you have too many domain names in your portfolio. It’s an entertaining domaining-related dialogue that’s worth reading if you need a little bit of amusement today!

If I had kute.com I would not sell this domain at $20,000 for any reasons.

Most domainers will die without realizing a fraction of their portfolio value, and that is if they own good names. No one talks about the thousands of good names registered since the 90's which are yet unsold only because the owners still are awaiting maximum value as they deem it is worth.

It could be out of greed, but it is not easy getting good names to make rollover profits. But nevertheless; keeping domain for too long tie down the cash which one could have made in many folds.

Thanks for putting the list together. Tosu seems like a better deal for the seller than Kute, but it is not like $20,000 is some super-bargain.
