In this week's Top Topics, we look at NFTs and why domain investors are seemingly moving much of their attention over to this new asset class. Elsewhere, George Kirikos has discovered another seven-figure domain name sale.

Why Are Domain Investors Buying NFTs?

NFTs, non-fungible tokens, have dominated domainer Twitter feeds and discussions for months. Many domain investors have been buying up NFTs, with the Bored Ape Yacht Club being a particularly popular choice. Domainers Andy and James Booth, for example, made headlines by buying Bored Ape #3749 for 400 ETH, around $1.3 million at the time of purchase.

Other domain investors, though, are puzzled by the world of NFTs. Why, then, are some domainers trading in NFTs, and what makes domain investors so suited to this?

Are You Putting Money into Cryptocurrency or NFTs Rather Than Domains?

Following on from the discussion above is this question that was posed. Are you putting money into cryptocurrency or NFTs rather than domain names? With potential returns higher for cryptocurrency and NFTs at the moment, are funds being diverted from domain name purchases into these new areas of investment?

Based on the responses to this question in the discussion so far, it seems that many domainers are looking skeptically at NFTs and some consider now to be an opportunity to acquire domain names while much of the attention of some investors is elsewhere.

Hippo.com Acquired for $3.3 Million

In recent weeks, domain investor and expert SEC sleuth George Kirikos has unearthed several seven-figure domain sales including deals for Sports.com, Better.com, and IS.com. Now, he has discovered another sizable domain sale that required more investigative legwork than usual.

In short, Kirikos learned that Hippo Insurance acquired Hippo.com for $3.3 million. The sale was reported by @Bob Hawkes, noting that the well-funded company upgraded from MyHippo.com to simply Hippo.com.

Can You Make a Living With Parking?

Domain parking is the strategy of allowing your domain name to resolve to a page of adverts in exchange for a share of any revenue generated. In the 2000s, many domain investors made a substantial income from domain parking, but revenue from domain parking has broadly decreased in recent years.

Can you, then, still make a living from domain name parking in 2021? This discussion aims to find out whether there are any domain investors still making a sizable income from parking. It seems that the majority of domainers who have responded to this question make very little with domain parking.
