In this week's Top Topics, we look at the recent sale of Gaming.io on a $105,000 payment plan, questions are answered about scaling up your domain name business, and it's revealed that popular brandable marketplace Alter is to close down.

Is Trading Domains a Thing?

The domain name industry is built on buying and selling domains, whether it's a registrar selling domain registrations or the active investor and end-user aftermarket. What is perhaps less obvious is perhaps the possibility of trading domains.

Here, an investor wants to know whether trading a domain for another domain is possible and what are the potential logistical hurdles that need to be overcome when trading domains?

Gaming.io Sells for $105,000 Payment Plan

The .io extension had a prolific 2021, with NameBio recording $4.2 million worth of .io sales, including five domains sold at $100,000 or more. The extension is also off to a great start in the first quarter of 2022.

This week, James Booth revealed that he sold Gaming.io for $105,000. I was able to find out that this is a payment plan deal that includes a $45,000 down payment and a further $60,000 paid over six months.

The sale of Gaming.io comes hot on the heels of Efty founder Doron Vermaat's sale of Seal.io for $60,000.

Not to be outdone, .XYZ recorded its first six-figure sale this week, with Capital.xyz selling for $105,000. The deal has been added to the NameBio database.

How Did You Scale-Up in Domaining?

Something that many new domain investors might want to know is how do you transition from a small portfolio with sporadic sales to a sizable portfolio with hundreds or thousands of domains and a constant stream of sales.

In short, how do you scale up in domaining? One successful full-time investor, AbdulBasit Makrani, has answered several questions in this discussion.

In a related discussion, Bob Hawkes is looking for input on a future NamePros Blog article looking at leveling up your domain name business.

Alter is Closing Down

Users of popular domain name marketplace Alter have been notified that the business is closing down. Alter, operating at Alter.com, was a brandable marketplace that took a commission of 10% from each sale, far less than other brandable marketplaces such as Squadhelp or Brandbucket.

Domain investors and fans of the service are discussing the news in this discussion, which also includes a copy of the original email sent from Alter to its users.

Damn, I've seen so many io domains actually in use with good names that I haven't thought about sellers...
