tips The Secret Weapon of a Chinese Domain Expert

Spaceship Spaceship
I am honored and surprised that so many domainers are embracing me as a Chinese domain expert. Many are amazed that I can explain the meanings of Chinese domain names with ease and speed. Some even want me to appraise their domain names for China. Let me teach you how I am able to quickly answer questions about Chinese domain names and find their meanings.

First, let me set the record straight: I'm not a natural expert in Chinese domain names. In fact, when I was growing up in Hong Kong, I disliked Chinese literature because I failed to see how it could relate to my life.

However, I do have a secret weapon that I call “the list,” which lets me easily find the meanings to Chinese domain names. The list consists of five columns: Date, Keyword, Chinese, English, Comment. See the screenshot below. I use Microsoft Access to manage the list, but any software tool with good search and filtering functions can work as well.

Every day, I visit Baidu News to read news relating to domain names in China. Many news stories are very useful for my purposes because the writers often include further explanations of domain names. For example, news from January 12th reported on the sale of BY.com and included four meanings of “BY” in Chinese.

Using news reports, I enter the date, keyword, and Chinese meaning of the domain name into the list. Sometimes, I also include the English translation, as in the example below.
  • BY: 白银 (Silver)
  • BY: 榜样 (Example)
  • BY: 百亿 (Ten billion)
  • BY: 表演 (Show)
So the next time someone asks me the meaning of BY, I can retrieve it quickly to answer the question.

If you look at each translation, you'll notice that each letter in the English pair corresponds to one Chinese character. So, I also break down the name into individual letters, such as:
  • B: 百 (Hundred)
  • Y: 亿 (One hundred million)
  • BY: B (100) × Y (100,000,000) = Ten billion (10,000,000,000)
This gives me even more flexibility. Now, if someone asks me the meaning of BM, for example, instead of BY, I can use the list to produce the following for BM:
  • B: 不 八 冰 北 宝 巴 布 报 白 百 背 补 霸 兵 棒 标 步 表 贝 博 吧 包 暴 爸 榜
  • M: 买 名 媒 明 模 母 民 美 间 魔 麻 米 芒 默 漫 梦 无 面 没 罵 贸 卖
I then sift through the combinations of B and M to find some useful Chinese phrases, such as:
  • BM: 帮忙 (Help)

I do the same with numbers. For example, the January 12th report of the 772.com sale contains the following meanings for 772:

772-dot-com.jpg

  • 772: 亲亲爱 (Kiss, kiss, love)
  • 772 :琪琪爱 (Fine love)
Again, I enter this information into the list as a whole, and then I break down the numbers into individual digits and enter them into the list as well.

This is the primary method that I use to build my Chinese domain name knowledge database (“the list”). I have also written a simple computer program to make it easy to store and retrieve the information that the list contains. I can answer questions about Chinese domain names quickly because of the work I have done beforehand creating the list.

There you have it. As you can see, any Chinese-speaking person can become a Chinese domain expert by doing exactly as I have. So what am I? A diligent domain student at best.

I've been trying to marry a Chinese woman for years. I think they are beautiful. But my wife doesn't agree
Then, encourage your daughter to marry a Chinese man.

I did, she is.
I hope she has brought you fortune, happiness, and lots of delicious Chinese dishes.

YOU use Chinese as your expert in domaining and it is afffecting your life now.
You are right, but I didn't know when I was growing up.

Just wondering: are the pricetags for by.com and 772.com known?
BY.com sold for 4.29m CNY http://news.ename.cn/yumingjiaoyi_20160112_102627_1.html
772.com sold for 2.92m CNY http://news.ename.cn/yumingjiaoyi_19700822_102617_1.html

Actually I also disliked Chinese history because I had to remember names of too many kings and queens and dynasties. Now I like history because I realize people tend to repeat the same kind of mistakes so I can learn from their mistakes.

First secret is understanding chinese

One secret is to find ways of circumventing having to learn Chinese in respect of buying and selling China related domain names which entails, among other things, careful checking, cross referencing,re checking.

That would take away the fun and make it too easy. So, no hyphen please. Ha Ha!
