I regularly look through Crunchbase to see what new startups are doing, and I came across a company using a .BIKE domain name: the first .bike domain name that I’ve seen in action.
The .BIKE domain name belongs to a company called Cobi, who use smart technology to enhance your bike. It’s a really smart idea that uses your phone and a little thumb control to operate lights, brakes, signals, a bell, and much more.
The idea seems to have gained traction, with over $400,000 raised on Kickstarter and $4 million in seed funding.
Naturally, as a domainer, I wanted to explore the other options that Cobi have for their domain name. Cobi.Bike works well, but with their recent successful funding, would it be worth adding other domain names to their arsenal?
Cobi.com currently resolves to a Catchy.com landing page and is under privacy at Uniregistry. According to the Catchy.com website, Cobi.com has a Buy-It-Now price of $100,000.
Cobi.com isn’t a necessity to their brand, in my opinion. Cobi.bike does an excellent job of describing the brand and their market. It’s a perfect example of how the new TLDs can be used to get a first rate domain in an extension that works for the company, rather than using a second rate .com such as cobibike.com or paying $100,000 for cobi.com.
