Transactions involving two-letter .COM domain names have been regular news items in the past couple of years, thanks largely to Chinese domain investors who have been acquiring as many two-letter .COM's as possible. Today, however, we are documenting the acquisition of the SE.com domain name by a French energy company, Schneider Electric.
SE.com was previously owned and operated by CentralNIC, a British-based domain registry that operated a number of second-level domains on a wide range of two-letter .COM's such as
GoDaddy's NameFind division has been selling much of their two-letter .COM portfolio to China, with AK.com being one of GoDaddy's latest sales. However, SE.com breaks the pattern of names heading to China.
According to DomainIQ, SE.com moved away from GoDaddy earlier this month to a European registrar. The name also changed WHOIS details to show the new owner as being a client of French brand protection company NameShield.
Thanks to research performed by domain investor George Kirikos (@GeorgeK), we can conclude that it's highly likely that SE.com was acquired by Schneider Electric. This French energy company has a total of 144,000 employees with close to €25 billion in revenue for 2016.
It's an excellent upgrade for Schneider Electric, who are currently using the domain name Schneider-Electric.com to host their main website. As of writing, SE.com resolves to a generic NameShield web page.
Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we will be able to bring you news of the domain's sales price since GoDaddy keeps its sales data private. However, it is likely that this is a six or seven figure sale due to public sales data that is available for comparable domain names.
Congratulations to Schneider Electric on their latest domain name purchase. Was this a good acquisition for the energy company? Have your say in the comments below.
