information Part Two: A Closer Look at $1.6 Million Worth of Mike Mann's Sales

NameSilo
Last week, we published our initial findings from a review of Mike Mann's published sales since the start of 2015. The data, which is all from Mike's Twitter feed, brought up some very interesting aspects for discussion within the community. This week, we continue our look at the data, which includes a full table listing all of the sales that Mike has published since January 2015.

mmdata.jpg
Firstly, let's look at the length of each domain name. We touched briefly on this last week, finding that 26.2% of all sales were 11 or 12 characters in length. Following on from that, we've found that the average length across all domain names is 11 characters.

These 11-character domains include OuttaTheBlue.com for $6,000 and HelpSomeone.com for $4,000. Elsewhere, there have been a huge amount of sales for domain names that are 11 characters in length. According to NameBio.com, there have been 3,355 sales for domains with 11 characters in all TLDs. These sales include OrganicBaby.com for $168,000 and BookKeeping.com for $150,000.

In terms of the length of time that Mike has held his domain names, it looks like getting five and six figure sales takes a considerable amount of patience. From the data available, the average time that Mike owns a domain before selling it is 1,974 days. This equates to 5 years, 4 months, 3 weeks and 6 days.

The longest period of time that Mike has held one of the 83 domain names analysed is 4,190 days, which is almost 11 and a half years. That name is TheGoodWord.com, which Mike acquired in February 2005 for $350, and eventually sold for $40,000 in August 2016.

The shortest period of time between an acquisition and a sale is with the domain TakeTheChance.com, which was acquired in August 2013 for $300, before being sold in March 2015 for $15,000. That's roughly a 4,900% return on investment within 594 days.

After part one of our analysis of Mike's sales, we had some requests to see the full table of data that we compiled. Here is the data that we managed to find from Mike's Twitter page, showing his sales from January 2015 until the start of September 2016.

Only 2 names that sold are 3 years old or less and the majority are 6 years old or more. Seeing that there are $500 names and $1,000 names on the list then this must be a pretty complete list of all of his sales including the lower priced ones.

If the list does include all sales including lower priced sales then it would be easy to assume he doesn't handreg to many names. Obviously he did handreg 13,000 names that one time in 2012. I'm curious if he found that experiment not to be worth it since handregged sales have not shown up in his sales list the past 2 years.

I would love to know how many names he owns that are less than 3 years old to get a good gauge of how many names he still handregs or if he got away from handregs all together because he realized it wasn't fruitful.

Thats definitely not everything sold by Mann in the past year! The guy has like a million names, its impossible to have sold only a handful of names in a year! I would say these are the most notable! Most of the sales here are in the Castello brothers style; looking for an extremely high ROI, which is a low volume high margin game for him.

These are the names that Mike posted on his Twitter.

He also posted a few weeks ago that his average sales price is $2,000 - the average here is around $19k, which suggests that this chart is only a very small percentage of his sales.

Are all end users? Because It seems that, he sells only to end users. If so, would be very interesting to know if most of the reported sales are coming from active out reaching process or simply by waiting coming inquires. I think, deeply understand the salling strategy, would be the final and key aspect of the Mike's business strategy.

I believe the only name on the list that was sold to an investor was AUX.com.

I agree with you but it seems odd that he would list some $500 sales and some $1,000 sales but not list all sales in this range. It makes no sense to list some really small sales and not list all really small sales. Why list a couple small sales only? That's what doesn't make sense to me.

Thank you @James Iles You've brought us another nice package as usual.
I think it is impossible to get all his sales report right from the beginning to date. I 'm sure all these domains are those sales when he began to know the business; he acquired SpeakFreely.com and some other 3 or 4 domains each for sum of $350 in 2005 and you should know he started the business well before then.

@James Iles what do you think is his selling strategy?

@James Iles what do you think is his selling strategy?

Set a high BIN price and wait for someone to enquire, by the looks of it! Although I'm sure his system is more sophisticated than that. Like any great salesman, he keeps a few secrets.

He made some good longer domain sales.

He has been quoted in various publications as saying that he grabs around 200-300 domains per day.
Based on his new acquisitions and current portfolio, it's safe to say that he sells at least 20 domains/day.
BuyDomains (same business model) seem to be moving 10-15 names/day.
