information Expert Exchange: What Is Typically Your Most Profitable Month of the Year?

NameSilo
In December 2016, we brought you the first part of a brand new series in which we ask several domain industry experts to answer a single question. In this article, our second installment, we find out whether there really is a more profitable time of the year to be a domain investor.

Domaining could be considered a seasonal business, with less activity in the summer months when decision makers traditionally take vacation time. However, is this something that our experts have noticed?

We asked:

What is typically your most profitable month of the year?

I haven't analyzed my sales data, but I haven't developed the sense that sales were weighted more to one part of the year over the other. Partly it is that large sales can happen at any time, and partly it seems that there is usually a steady deal flow and any variation seems random and not related to the month.

May, but that’s because I sell so many flowers in the nursery that month. In domaining, it really depends on when the sales come, which are random. Fall and Spring are usually the best.

November and December. There is a lot of year-end spending and those two months are traditionally the best.

I don't think there is a most profitable month of the year. There are surely, though, less profitable months of the year: if you are working with one-word .com’s and end users, the market definitely slows down in the summer, and, if you are working with liquid domains, the month before Chinese New Year (usually January) is slow and a good time to make purchases.

I think November/December is usually a busy time for me, as well as late spring like May/June.

Tessa Holcomb, Co-Founder and CEO of Igloo Domain Brokerage
Igloo seems to do really well in the 1st and 4th Quarters of the year, but because we deal in higher ticket domain sales, one eight-figure sale can easily throw off this curve.

November or December

I've always found Q4 to be strong; in particular, it alternates between November and December. At the same time, there's a lot of randomness to domain sales. Sometimes you just get an interested buyer out of the blue. I can remember one monster February, and I wasn't expecting it, but it turned out to be my highest revenue month that year.

I agree with those that say November. I made two bigger sales in November 2015 and November 2016. It's definitely a good luck month for me so far.

February was my best month last year, but negotiations started around late November or early December.
