development Domain Development: Create Your Own "Domain For Sale" Page With WordPress

Spaceship Spaceship
As part of my series on how to develop out your portfolio of domain names, we shall be looking at ways of making money from developing your domains into lead generation sites, affiliate sites and authority websites. Those subjects will be covered in subsequent posts, as today I'm going to show you how to create your own "Domain For Sale" landing page using WordPress.

This subject stems from a question I received last week asking for advice on which theme to use in order to create a customised sales landing page for a number of domains.

There are a couple of ways of doing this that can be easily replicated and will give you a stylish "Domain For Sale" page with very little effort required. Firstly, there's a theme called Domena, which you may wish to check out.

Domena 2.0
Domena 2.0 is a premium WordPress theme specifically designed for selling domain names. It has a simple, clean design that is responsive across any screen size, and it can be used on multiple domain names. A demo of the theme can be viewed here.

Whilst I haven't personally used this theme yet, I know of a lot of domain names which utilise the theme to attract leads.

If you have seen the demo (linked above), you'll notice that Domena 2.0 includes an extremely large title, and a for sale banner. Any visitor to your website will know immediately that the name may be for sale, and moving further down the page the visitor will discover a sales blurb in which you can tell prospective buyers why this domain name is worth purchasing, as well as two links.

These links are a "Buy Now" link and a "Make Offer" link, and are the most important part of the theme. On Domena 2.0's admin panel, you can set up custom links to guide visitors to the correct pages by clicking these links.

Clicking the "Buy Now" link can take you to an "instructions" page, where you can tell the prospective buyer how to complete a their purchase, or it can link directly to a PayPal checkout, where the buyer can submit payment for the domain straight away.

The "Make Offer" link will send your visitors to a page in which they can contact you directly to make further contact regarding your domain name. This is done using a custom contact form from Contact Form 7 - one of the 5 essential plugins I recommended a couple of weeks ago.

The simplicity of the admin panel means that you can get this theme up and running in a matter of minutes. If you're interested in viewing the Domena 2.0 admin panel, the theme's creators have made presentation GIF here.

Do It Yourself
If using the above theme isn't for you, then you could try creating your own sales landing page. If you read my article last week entitled "5 Top WordPress Themes For Domainers", you'll know that I like the StudioPress Genesis platform and one of its Child Themes: Altitude.

I think that this theme would be perfect for a DIY domain sales landing page. Using this theme, you can very easily create a one page site describing your domain name in detail. You could also include links to relevant articles which may help a visitor become a buyer (such as our Inside Interviews series).

The pre-designed landing page links of the Altitude Child Theme can convert perfectly into "Buy Now" and "Make Offer" links, sending visitors to pre-determined pages.

Using a theme such as the one described above in conjunction with the free Contact Form 7 plugin (to enable visitors to easily contact you) should serve as an excellent repeatable WordPress domain landing page.

This Domain Name Is For Sale Plugin
A $15 WordPress plugin may be all that you need to sell your domain names effectively. The plugin, which can be viewed here, works with any theme and has a comprehensive list of features that will go towards helping you sell your domains.

Features of this plugin include the ability to handle hundreds of domain names per installation. You can also set custom pricing per domain name, and include an array of facts about each domain to help a prospective buyer make an informed decision.

If you're looking to add your own advertising to your domain sales landing page (perhaps an Adsense banner or two), then this can be taken care of with this plugin. Custom widget areas allow you to create adverts above, below and to the side of your sales form.

A cheap solution that's definitely worth looking at.

These solutions are an alternative to parking your domains at venues such as DomainNameSales.com, Sedo.com or Voodoo.com and allow you to have complete control over your domain's content, price and lead information. Whilst this type of development can take time to implement on a larger portfolio, it can be worth the time and peace of mind of knowing that you're controlling every aspect of your domain sales process.

Thanks for the post, very useful. If someone could set up these themes in bulk - that would be great.

Thanks for the write up. The Domena product looks nice. I also want to suggest another tool, Efty.com, it's a portfolio management app that allows you to have a For Sale page for lead generation if you park your domains at their nameservers - all you need to do is add your domain to your porfolio and park the domain and the For sale page is setup.

IMHO. Using WordPress for a Domain For Sale is overkill. Using a whole lot of resources for what is a simple task.

Using Wordpress in bulk for this task is even worse, IMHO. When this can be setup for wildcard domain names, for very little overhead. See NomSales.com/contact.php?domain=domainsales.com (this is not my domain).

Hmmm.. that does make sense. I need to rethink was I was initially thinking of doing!

Do you not have a landing page or custom email address at all for the domain you're trying to sell? Still not sure if I should continue creating those or just have a blank site and 1 email account I use for outreach on all my domains.

@cdnbigd - Of course a tailored landing page for each domain where you can sing the praises about that domain, would be best. But it is impractical to system-ize this. What is practical is to have 1 landing page which serves all domains. You don't need a complex and heavy program like wordpress to do this. Also you only need 1 email address. Not 1 for each domain. You can get all that I have said using the php mailer and a few lines of code, probably a lot less than 100, depending on how sophisticated you want to be.

So a simple landing page + php mailer vs wordpress + plugin. I know which I would, and do, choose.

Great article. Thanks James.

Has anyone here used this theme? I wonder, when if I choose the theme, will there be support? What if I run into problem?

@pablohc86 - If you are talking about the link at NomSales.com it is working for me. It's quite a heavy page, so it takes a little while to load. I intend to slim down the background graphic, but it's not urgent :)
