Just got HongChau.com after seeing this!
I'm curious to know why Chinese investors are investing in .top?

.top is a Chinese registry and it looks like the auction was sponsored by .top.

Interesting that those pinyin .com continue to sell very well. Looks like IDN are out of the picture.

BTW - do Chinese buy hyphenated domains as it looks like pinyin is perfect for it?

JiancChou.com should be JianChou.com?

I don't think they like to say something like "Wo Hyphen ai hyphen ni" IMO.
the English version would be I-Love-You.com.

But most of those on auction are just two tier pinyin eg Fu Shun?

Interesting also that nearly all of the pinyin sales have the same registrant or nominee, was that a requirement of the auction?

Although top is an English word, Chinese people know its meaning. Since its GA on November 18, 2014, .top has a registration number of 87,000, among which around 80% are registered by Chinese people.

You can check: https://namestat.org/top

1. Yes, it was sponsored by us.

2. Pinyin, digits, single and abbreviated English domains are quite popular in China, but IDN are not in the same situation, even Chinese characters.

3. Hyphenated domains are okay but not that good :D

I think so... I reged a few tonight using a dash but number related. If ya don't use a dash you'd need to rob a bank to pay the reg fee. :xf.grin:

My guess is that the domains on the auction might be in some kind of entrust status in case of ownership protection.

My personal fav: 8-8.中国

It pronounces like "bye-bye.zhongguo" in Chinese, suitable for someone who is leaving China with reluctant feeling;).

My personal fav: 8-8.中国
Yet, this is a very good domain since digit 8 is favored by Chinese people:xf.grin:
